Rulli’s resolution both pandering, insulting

DEAR EDITOR: U.S. Rep. Michael Rulli’s “Faith and Defiance Day” resolution manages to be both pandering and insulting at once. Pandering, because it’s simply one more example of a Republican officeholder bending over backwards to offer hyperbolic praise in order to both gain the fleeting attention of the president and also assuage his fragile ego. While the assassination attempt in Butler *could have* been far more tragic, can Rep. Rulli stop for a second and recognize that a man getting grazed on the tip of his ear is not exactly “one or two (of the) events in your life ...

Take a closer look at Mike DeWine’s vetoes

DEAR EDITOR: On July 2, The Vindicator published an article by David Skolnick titled: “DeWine vetoes 67 budget items.” This extensive article disingenuously alludes to DeWine’s line-item veto of 67 items in the Ohio budget, recently passed by the radical right wing-dominated Legislature. The article sought out and got responses from the local Republican legislators: State Rep. David Thomas (Jefferson), State Rep. Tex (formally known as Austin) Fischer (Boardman); State Sen. Al Cutrona (Canfield), and State Sen. Sandra O’Brien (Lenox). All four railed against DeWine’s ...

George Orwell’s ‘1984’ has now come to life

DEAR EDITOR: Your July 9 article describing the refusal of entry to the U.S. of a musician to perform here locally raised several disturbing questions. Of course, there is a disparity of the organizer claiming the musician “carried documentation proving the non-commercial nature of his performances” and the Border Patrol claiming the performer “did not have the appropriate employment-based visa to perform multiple events as a professional musician.” It doesn’t matter which documentation claim is the most accurate or the most applicable under the law. What matters is that the ...

Are all candidates treated equally?

DEAR EDITOR: There has been a great deal of news regarding independent candidates in Youngstown this year, and a lot of drama to go with it. While the mayoral race has everyone’s attention, another race has been forgotten about. During the Democratic primary, the race for president of council in Youngstown between Anita Davis and Mike Ray actually made the front page of The Vindicator. While this position doesn’t officially carry much weight, the person elected is the next in line to be mayor of our city. That alone should make this a position of interest. When the Mahoning ...

Sound off!

What part of “NO” does John White not understand??? And who would vote for him anyway, given his track record? — Boardman Good Lord above! Is there no humanity left in this country that noncriminal immigrants are being sent to the new Florida prison, a horrible metal building housing too many in each room, horrible conditions, for no reason and no rights allowed simply because they look suspicious. The degradation playing out in this administration is showing the world just how low we have sunk into almost a hell on Earth. What have we become that a human life is worth so ...

The Declaration of Independence our bedrock

DEAR EDITOR: The Vindicator has done a great service to its readers in the Mahoning Valley by publishing the Declaration of Independence on this July 4. The Vindicator brings to light the very foundation, the bedrock of our existence as a nation. Reviewing this document and particularly the 27 points (facts) established by the founders is so profoundly eye-opening. The founders painstakingly identified the reasons to establish a government of the people, by the people and for the people. So now, at 78 years old, I finally embrace this document as my own in every way possible. ...
