It’s time to do everything you can to save more lives

DEAR EDITOR: Are you worried about a friend? Be the one to help save a life. September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Unfortunately, our region continues to experience an increase in the number of individuals who need support and care. Social isolation, mental illness and difficult life transitions can play a role in the increased risk for suicide, but we also know that connectedness and a sense of belonging can protect against suicide. There are many ways you can help yourself or someone else who might be struggling. In addition to seeking help from crisis services ...

Trump is all about consolidating power

DEAR EDITOR: Lone Star citizens are proud to say “don’t mess with Texas.” They should say it to the political hacks of their state government, who openly admit that their gerrymandering of voting districts is meant to “improve our party’s political power” at Trump’s direction. Since when do the governing members of a small number of party poobahs determine which votes count for all Texans? It’s been an unfortunately long time. Prior to the power-grabbing influence of 47, gerrymandering, like the electoral college, underwent multiple attempts to modify or end it as ...

Chamber gets it right on international students

DEAR EDITOR: Kudos to Guy Coviello and the Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber for recognizing the vital role international students play in our region. At a time when isolationism is gripping much of the country, Coviello’s column offered a hopeful vision of how openness and diversity can help us revitalize the Mahoning Valley. Let’s encourage people to come here, not turn them away. CHRISTOPHER KROMER Warren

If Moore knows everything, he should run for office

DEAR EDITOR: A word to Stephen Moore and the rest of the pen-pushers concerning the Dems learning the error of their ways; If you would run for office with your all-knowing wisdom, we everyday Americans would vote for you, so we could all benefit from your actions, instead of your do-nothing writing about what’s not working. DONNA NASSER Sharon, Pa.

On Sept. 27, year 3 of the deer hunt in Millcreek Park will begin. 402 permits have been issued with each hunter allowed to kill six deer and bring along a hunting partner. The USDA survey shows that there are only 116 deer in Millcreek Park. Our deer will soon be gone, mothers and babies born this spring will be killed. The park board will not stop this hunt even with the knowledge of the numbers unable to sustain another hunt. — Poland The one thing Trump likes better than demonstrating dictatorial power is being praised for how well he does it. That’s what the deafening ...

Why can’t God stop the gun violence that plagues us?

DEAR EDITOR: The Sept. 2 editorial cartoon depicting a seemingly powerless Jesus on one knee mourning the gunfire carnage across our nation reminds me of the Epicurean paradox which is: “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” KIM R.
