Truck driver escapes injury in fire

NORTH JACKSON — A tractor-trailer driver, who parked his rig off the roadway on the exit ramp of the Ohio Turnpike to eastbound Interstate 80, escaped injury Friday morning by jumping out of his cab before it burst into flames.

According to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield post, the incident occurred about 8 a.m. as area fire departments including North Jackson were summoned to put out the fire.

The tractor trailer had pulled off the road at Exit 219 of the Ohio Turnpike on Thursday night, and the driver, who was not identified, told a trooper he smelled smoke and jumped out. The driver was not injured, the report states.

Troopers continue their investigation, but the exit lane remained open throughout the morning as emergency crews cleared the scene after 11 a.m., the report states.
