Sat. 5:20 p.m.: Scrap yard on fire in Girard

GIRARD — A scrap yard caught fire on U.S. Route 422 near the Youngstown border and Interstate 80 around 3:30 p.m. today.
Large black plumes of smoke could be seen as far east as Campbell and as far west as the Eastwood Mall in Niles.
Fire trucks from about a dozen departments were on the scene, most of them shuttling water to douse the flames because there are no fire hydrants at the site, according to firefighters.
People were sitting in the parking lots of Jib Jab, the Shell gas station and St. Rose Church watching the smoke, and people were sitting on the grassy hillside where Interstate 80 meets Route 422 as the scene unfolded. Fire trucks from Niles, Weathersfield and Warren could be seen racing down Route 422 around 4 p.m.
By 5:30 p.m., the smoke turned white instead of thick and black, according to a resident of Marshall Road in McDonald.
