YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown man was arrested Saturday following a shooting on the city’s North Side.

A Youngstown police report states Jermaine Anthony, 33, was arrested on a charge of felonious assault after police responded to reports of gunfire near Fairgreen Avenue and Griffith Street shortly after 1 p.m.

Police said a victim was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after being shot in the leg. The victim was listed in stable condition.

Police initially responded to the 100 block of Fairgreen, where they found a person who had been outside a residence when the shooting occurred.

The witness said a blue vehicle traveling south on Griffith Street stopped near the corner of Fairgreen, and its occupant began shooting at a man standing on the sidewalk. The witness said the man returned fire, striking the vehicle, before fleeing toward a nearby hospital.

Police found the victim at the hospital, where he identified Anthony as the suspected shooter and told them he lives on Upland Avenue.

They went to 141 Upland Ave., where they spotted a vehicle parked outside. A male suspect fled on foot when police arrived.

Police located the man as he attempted to escape into a field. The officer drew his weapon and ordered him to stop, and the man complied.

Police verified his identity and took him into custody. They also recovered a firearm that Anthony had discarded during the pursuit. He remained in the Mahoning County jail Monday. He also made an initial appearance in Youngstown Municipal Court, and Judge Carla Baldwin set a preliminary hearing for Nov. 2.

Youngstown police also responded to a shooting on Saturday at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West Rayen Avenue. They found a man lying on the ground outside his car with gunshot wounds to both legs.

The police report stated very little beyond that, other than to say that he was listed in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
