YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown man is accused of trying to strangle his pregnant girlfriend.
Anthony Bonner, 45, was arrested on domestic violence and felony strangulation charges after he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend during an argument Monday night, according to police.
Police responded just after 10 p.m. to a residence on Canfield Road, where the woman told them Bonner had repeatedly struck her, slammed her against a wall and choked her, leaving her struggling to breathe, the police report said.
The report states the woman said she had fled her apartment to escape Bonner, although police reported seeing no visible injuries.
The woman told police she had recently returned to the apartment after spending several days away because of relationship problems with Bonner.
She said Bonner arrived at the apartment around 9:30 p.m. with his 11-year-old son and appeared to be intoxicated. An argument followed, escalating into a physical confrontation while the woman, who said she is 34 weeks pregnant, was sitting on the couch.
The woman told police Bonner struck her multiple times in the stomach before she fell from the couch. She said she kicked a coffee table toward him to keep him away and ran toward the bathroom.
Bonner then allegedly slammed her against a wall near a mirror, knocking the mirror down.
The woman said Bonner struck her in the stomach again before choking her with enough force that she struggled to breathe.
She eventually escaped the apartment and ran to a neighbor’s residence for help.
The neighbor called the woman’s uncle, who lives nearby, and the woman went to his residence, where police found her upon arrival.
They requested an ambulance to evaluate the woman for possible injuries. She was later transported to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital for further examination and treatment.
Police located Bonner inside the apartment, where he was taken into custody.
The report states Bonner’s son was inside the apartment during the altercation and was left alone briefly when Bonner was arrested. The child was later released to Bonner’s sister at his request.
Bonner was transported to the Mahoning County jail on charges of domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor, and strangulation, a third-degree felony.
He is scheduled to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court this morning.
A survey of Youngstown Municipal Court and Mahoning County Common Pleas Court records shows that Bonner has a lengthy criminal history including prior charges and convictions for domestic violence, aggravated menacing, aggravated burglary, receiving stolen property and various other offenses, dating back to at least 2001.
