Assault rifle, machine gun pierce South Side

YOUNGSTOWN — A witness said Monday afternoon gunfire in the 200 block of Pasadena Avenue on the South Side involved a man on a porch having a “shootout” with others and that an AK-47 type of assault rifle, a machine gun and an automobile were involved.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Pasadena at 2:21 p.m. for a ShotSpotter notification, which notifies Youngstown police of gunfire.

When officers arrived, they saw a silver Nissan Pathfinder in a driveway that had a bullet hole in the rear passenger side door and a broken rear window. Another shot pierced the front windshield near the front pillar of the vehicle. There also was some driver-side window damage, a police report states.

Officers searched the area and did not find bullet shell casings. Neighbors said a shootout took place with a man on the porch “returning fire,” the report states. A resident said a man screamed, “‘get down’ before shots were fired.” The person heard the sound of an AK-47 type weapon and machine gun before the person “heard tires screeching off.”

An officer then discovered a bullet hole in the driver’s side door of a black Kia Stinger parked in the roadway. Another person said he or she was in the shower when the shooting occurred and did not see anything.

The report does not indicate that officers were able to speak to the man mentioned as having “returned fire” from the porch, nor whether anyone was known to be injured.
