Restaurateur faces charges after domestic dispute

BOARDMAN — A local restaurant owner is facing charges of domestic violence and unlawful restraint after a dispute brought police to his residence twice in one evening.

Michael D. Alberini, owner of Michael Alberini’s Restaurant on Boardman Poland Road, was arrested early Tuesday after a family member called police claiming Alberini was not letting his wife leave the home, according to a police report. Alberini, 54, threatened a standoff if anyone came to the house, the report states.

At 1:50 a.m., police approached the home and saw Alberini sitting in the front room with a semiautomatic rifle pointed at the front door, the report states. When police ordered him to drop the weapon, Alberini retreated to the main part of the house, the report states.

Police say the garage door opened and Alberini appeared unarmed and was handcuffed. The report states Alberini appeared to be intoxicated.

While searching the home, police found an unloaded rifle in the sunroom. Alberini told officers he had been cleaning the weapon, but the report states police did not find gun cleaning supplies in the house.

Alberni’s wife told officers she barricaded herself in a room, saying to police she feared for her safety and the safety of her child, the report states.

Police already had been to the home earlier in the evening when Alberini called 911 himself to report a domestic dispute between him and his wife.

For the earlier call, a separate report states Alberini drank two glasses of wine, which allegedly upset his wife. An argument ensued and Alberini allegedly called his wife vulgar names and threatened to tell police she punched him in the face. His wife recorded the entire conversation and showed it to police, the report states.

Officers determined at that time no crime had been committed and the couple was advised by police to stay away from each other the rest of the night, the report states.

According to online court records, Alberini pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Tuesday in county court in Boardman A $1,500 bond was set and a no contact order was issued between Alberini and his wife. A pretrial hearing is set for Jan. 18.
