Pair of South Side homicides reported within 24 hours

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Police Department is now investigating two homicides that happened in less than 24 hours, both on the city’s South Side.

The first occured just before midnight Thursday. Officers were alerted to the incident by the city’s ShotSpotter technology, which detected several shots fired near the 3200 block of South Avenue. Officers found a man dead with gunshot wounds in a parking lot.

Another gunshot victim arrived at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both men involved are in their 30s.

Then just after 4:30 p.m. Friday, officers received multiple calls of another shooting in the 3400 block of Market Street.

Upon arrival, officers found a man in the driver’s seat of a brown SUV with a female passenger. It was determined that multiple shots were fired into the vehicle.

Both were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital Youngstown, where the 19-year-old man died. The woman had non-life-threatening injuries, according to a news release from the police department.

The identities of either victim were not released Friday, pending family notification.

These latest shootings mark the city’s third and fourth homicides of the year. Last year, the city had 28 homicides.

On Jan. 21, police found the body of Kimberly Sarcozy, 53, on the side of Kenmore Avenue on the South Side. Police said they did not know what caused the woman’s death.

Van Lightning, 30, was found shot to death just after midnight New Year’s Day. Investigators said they believed that Lightning was shot at the corner of Glenwood and Almyra avenues, also on the South Side.

On Jan. 2, John A. “Bingo” Pettiford, 34, died after a two-vehicle crash at Wirt Street and Delaware Avenue on the North Side. Police believe he was shot elsewhere and drove to the crash location. The occupant of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Investigators are asking that anyone with information to call the department at 330-742-8YPD or call Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE. Tips may be left anonymously.
