Women out to extend 3-game streak

The Youngstown State women’s basketball team carries a three-game winning streak into this weekend’s Horizon League series at Beeghly Center against Detroit Mercy. The Penguins (3-3, 3-3 Horizon) face the Titans (1-13, 1-9) Friday and Saturday, at 2 p.m. on both days. Friday’s game will be broadcast on WINO-AM 1390 and on ESPN-plus.

The YSU men will face Illinois-Chicago at 5 p.m. both days.

The women’s team swept UIC on the road last weekend, posting wins of 77-66 and 66-59.

Nneka Obiazor (5-10, Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) has been named Horizon League Freshman of the Week each of the last two weeks. She is averaging 13.8 points and 9.8 rebounds over that time period.

Senior Chelsea Olson (5-10, Westby, Wis.) became the 23rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points when she reached the milestone last Friday. Olson is currently the only Division I player in the country with career totals of at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 300 assists.

In its three wins, YSU has averaged 71.7 points, shot 47.3 percent from the field and committed 15.3 turnovers per game.

Fifth-year senior Mary Dunn (6-3, Washington, Pa.) and Olson are the team’s top two scorers at 12.7 points per game. Olson was a First-Team All-Horizon League selection in 2019-20 and Dunn earned that honor in 2018-19.

Detroit Mercy ranks ninth in the league in scoring offense and 10th in scoring defense.

Junior guard Kaela Webb, a Providence transfer, leads the Titans with 17.7 points per game and 32 3-pointers. She ranks third in the conference in scoring average, and she has attempted 78 more field goals than any other Titan. Markyia McCormick averages 9.6 points, and Sylare Starks averages 6.6.
