Obiazor stars in women’s victory

Fresh off being named Horizon League Freshman of the Week, Youngstown State’s Nneka Obiazor nailed a tie-breaking 3-pointer in the final minute as the Penguins won 66-59 on Saturday at Illinois-Chicago.

Obiazor’s 3-pointer, which came with 50 seconds remaining, put YSU ahead 62-59. Chelsea Olsen followed with a blocked shot on the Flames’ ensuing possession and the Penguins (3-3, 3-3 Horizon) were 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 22 seconds to clinch their third straight victory.

Obiazor finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, and Mary Dunn had 18 points and nine rebounds. They helped the Penguins hold a 36-22 edge in points in the paint, and YSU also had six blocked shots.

The lead changed hands 16 times, including 12 times in the second half. There were also nine ties in the game.

Olson ended up with 11 points, six assists, four steals and four rebounds to follow up her effort on Friday night when she surpassed 1,000 points in her career. Mady Aulbach finished with eight points in 28 minutes off the bench, and McKenah Peters and Malia Magestro both had five points.

YSU shot 47.1 percent for the game — its third straight game shooting at least 47 percent — and shook off a cold start from beyond the arc to finish 6-for-21. The Penguins were 1-for-11 from long distance in the first half, but they were 3-for-8 in the third period and 2-for-2 in the fourth.

UIC is 2-7, 1-5 in the Horizon League.

Youngstown State returns home next weekend to host Detroit Mercy (1-13, 1-9) for a pair of Horizon League games. The Penguins and Titans will play at 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the YSU men’s basketball team.
