2nd-half woes lead to loss for Penguins

CLEVELAND — Youngstown State was outscored 51-34 in the second half as Cleveland State shot 67.7 percent after intermission and the Vikings beat the Penguins 81-74 on Sunday afternoon.

Tre Gomillion had a career-high 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting for Cleveland State (4-3, 4-0 Horizon League) and Torrey Patton added 19 points. It was the fourth straight win for the Vikings who are 4-0 in league play for the first time in 10 seasons. D’Moi Hodge added 14 points. Deante Johnson had 10 rebounds.

Cleveland State beat the Penguins 87-69 on Saturday.

Garrett Covington had 24 points and seven rebounds for the Penguins (4-3, 1-3). Freshman Alex Vargo added 14 points, a career-high, and six rebounds. Naz Bohannon had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Shemar Rathan-Mayes added 11 points.

YSU led 40-30 at halftime and increased the advantage to 46-32 early in the second half after Covington made two 3-pointers to start the half. CSU cut the lead to 50-45, but YSU opened a 56-47 advantage with 14:30 remaining after Rathan-Mayes and Will Dunn both made 3-pointers.

The home team continued its comeback, knotting the game at 60-60 at the 8:35 mark and taking its first lead at 62-60 on a bucket by Gomillion with 7:56 remaining in the game.

A basket by Bohannon and two free throws by Rathan-Mayes gave the Peguins a 64-62 lead and Vargo’s fourth 3-pointer of the game put YSU up 67-65 with just under five minutes left.

Bohannon’s basket at the 2:38 mark tied the game at 70-70, but the Vikings scored 11 of the last 15 points of the game.

In the first half, the Penguins shot 51.7 percent from the floor, including making 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Covington led the Penguins with 13 first-half points while Vargo poured in 11.

YSU hosts Green Bay on Friday and Saturday with tipoff set for 4 p.m. both days.
