YSU’s Olson tabbed team MVP

YOUNGSTOWN — Junior Chelsea Olson was named the Coach Ed DiGregorio Most Valuable Player for the 2019-20 Youngstown State women’s basketball season, YSU head coach John Barnes announced Friday.

In addition to Olson being named MVP, four other Penguins earned team awards for their performances during the season. Redshirt freshman Taylor Petit was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year, freshman Quinece Hatcher was tabbed the Sixth Player of the Year, freshman Maddie Schires was named the Newcomer of the Year, and McKenah Peters was honored as the Belleria Struthers Team Impact Player of the Year.

Olson was an All-Horizon League First Team selection after ranking eighth in the league in scoring and being among the top nine in eight different categories. She averaged a career-high and team-leading 12.1 points per game and became the fourth player to lead YSU in points and assists in the same season.
