Bowling finishes eighth

The Youngstown State bowling team went 2-1 in best-of-seven bracket play on Sunday and finished the Mid-Winter Invitational in eighth place.

The Penguins began the day in ninth place and were able to move up one spot behind wins over Tulane and UAB. Youngstown State’s lone loss on Sunday was in seven games to Louisiana Tech.

The Penguins strung together consecutive games of 245, 244 and 260 to take a 3-1 lead on No. 16 Tulane, and they won game six by posting a 212. YSU then built another 3-1 lead on No. 21 UAB and held on to win with a 211-174 victory in game seven. Youngstown State was in the opposite situation in its third match as it trailed No. 11 Louisiana Tech, and it won the next two games before falling 247-216 in the finale.

Youngstown State will be idle next week before competing at the Big Red Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Feb. 28 through March 1.
