Olson, Wendler earn HL honors

Youngstown State women’s basketball players Chelsea Olson and Jen Wendler have been named the Horizon League Player and Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Olson won the honor for the second time in her career, the first time this season. This is Wendler’s first time for her honor after road wins at Oakland and Detroit Mercy.

Olson, a Westby, Wis., native, averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the last two games. She also reached three significant career milestones last week, recording her 750th career point, 500th career rebound and 250th career assist. She joined Danielle Carson and Liz Hauger as the only Penguins in program history to reach each of those levels.

Wendler, a native of Owen, Wis., had 11 points in both games last week while averaging 7.5 rebounds and shooting an impressive 54.5 percent from the field. She also shout a combined 16-of-16 from the free-throw line.

YSU hosts Green Bay Friday at 7 p.m.
