YSU women can’t hold on vs. Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — No. 12 Indiana made its first eight field-goal attempts in the second half and pulled away over the final 20 minutes to beat the Youngstown State women’s basketball team, 93-56, on Sunday afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

The Penguins battled with the Hoosiers in the first half and led by as many as seven points twice in the second period. YSU led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and trailed just 41-38 before Indiana held a 52-18 edge in the second half.

YSU’s McKenah Peters scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and Chelsea Olson had 14 points on nine field-goal attempts while adding five caroms. Taylor Petit scored seven points, and Gabby Lupardus registered a game-high nine assists, eight of which came in the first half.

Ali Patberg scored 15 of her game-high 18 points in the second half for Indiana.

As hot as the Hoosiers were to start the second half, they were ever colder to start the game as YSU held IU without a field goal for almost eight minutes. The Hoosiers missed their first nine shots, and they were 3-for-14 from the field two minutes into the second period.

Petit scored the first points of the game at the 6:42 mark, and Maddie Schires’ 3-pointer with 6:29 remaining put YSU ahead 28-21, but that’s when IU started to get hot. The Hoosiers scored the next 12 points as YSU went scoreless for 3:30 as IU pulled away.
