YOUNGSTOWN — William Dunn, Myles Hunter and Cheick (pronounced Shake) Traore recently signed their National Letters of Intent to join the Youngstown State University men’s basketball team.

Dunn is a 6-foot-8, 195-pound forward from Quincy, Mich. Hunter is 6-6, 190-pound guard from Charlotte, N.C., and Traore is a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Concord, N.C. Both Hunter and Traore have played on the same AAU team and remain good friends.

Dunn was a first-team, all-Michigan Associated Press selection as a sophomore and junior. He has scored more almost 1,300 points, averages nearly 19 points per game and has close to 600 rebounds for Quincy High School. He averaged 24 points, 11 rebounds and two assists last season.

“Will is somewhat a version of Michael (Akuchie),” said YSU coach Jerrod Calhoun of the current YSU basketball player. “He’s long, lanky, can really shoot. We like him.”

Hunter was part of Carmel Christian (N.C.) High School’s state title run, averaging 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists. He had 15 points in the state championship game.

“Myles is similar to Jelani (Simmons),” Calhoun said. “He’s got that length. He’s got that bounce to him.”

Traore hails from the Ivory Coast, coming to North Carolina on a student visa in 2017. He averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds last year for Concord (N.C.) First Assembly.

Calhoun said Traore knows his role is around the basket, not hovering around the 3-point arc. He’s going to screen, roll, dunk basketballs and take an active role in rebounding.

Calhoun said Traore’s presence around the basket reminds him of how West Virginia University 6-9, 258-pound freshman Oscar Tshiebwe, from Kennedy Catholic (Pa.) High School, utilizes his skills as a throwback big man. Tshiebwe had 20 points and 17 rebounds against Pittsburgh earlier this season.

“There’s not that anymore,” Calhoun said. “Everybody wants to shoot 3s. He’s a guy who knows who he really is. He’s going to expand his game once he gets here, work on some things. He’ll give us a great inside presence.”

The Penguins have 12 scholarship players out of a maximum 13 on its current roster. Donel Cathcart III and Devin Morgan are seniors. With these three signees, YSU will have 13 scholarship players on its 2020-21 roster.

“We’re excited about all three young men that are joining our program next fall,” Calhoun said. “It’s probably the first time since I’ve been here we’ve hit all of our main targets. Sometimes in recruiting you spend so much time recruiting guys you don’t get. It really fell into place with Cheick, Myles and Will. Those three guys are skilled. Those three really know how to play. They got a lot of size.”
