Golf adds Western Pa. standout

Western Pennsylvania standout Madie Smitcho has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Youngstown State women’s golf program in the fall of 2020, coach Nate Miklos announced on Thursday.

Smithco, who is from Cranberry Township, Pa., has played four years of varsity golf at North Catholic High School. She is a two-time PIAA Class 2A champion, winning the state title with a two-round 152 (76-76) as a sophomore and defending it with a 155 (77-78) as a junior. She carded a 159 (82-77) to finish second at the state tournament as a freshman.

Smithco won the WPIAL Class 2A girls individual championship with a score of 74 as a junior after finishing second during her freshman and sophomore seasons. She recorded a nine-hole scoring average of 36 as a senior, and recorded a low round of 70 in tournament play. Smithco was also invited to compete in the inaugural High School Golf National Championship, organized by the National High School Golf Association.

Joined by her parents Joseph and Jodi, Smithco signed her National Letter of Intent at North Catholic High School on Wednesday. She is slated to join fellow Western Pennsylvania natives Christina Lewis and Danae Rugola on the Penguins’ roster for the 2020-21 season.
