The "Grand Old Lady" of auto racing Sharon Speedway will swing open the gates for its 93rd year this Saturday.
The first event of the year will feature the ever exciting ULMS Late Models. The regional touring series will have some of the Tri States best drivers. The Late Models slip and slide, dip and dive two and three abreast for great racing. The red clay surface on the Hartford 3/8 oval has become a driver and fan favorite, providing multiple grooves, plenty of passing and is easy on equipment.
Joining opening day competition will be the UMP Mod, Pro Stocks, and RUSH Sportsman Mods. Gates open at 5:00 racing at 7:00. The 2023 season promises to be the biggest yet with 2 World of Outlaw Sprint car shows and three nights of World of Outlaw Late Models. Tony Stewart's All Stars will have three events, the first being April 30th for the Buckeye Cup.
NBC Sports will be in town to televise Stewart's SRX Racing experience July 23rd. Sharon Speedway has primarily become a special event track rather than weekly racing.
We live in one of the best areas in the country for auto racing. Within a couple hours we have access to so many speedways. A short drive on I-80 east we find Michaels Mercer Raceway racing on Saturday nights. They have also laid down the magic red clay, which is new for this season along with new lighting. The opener has been set for May 6-7 with the 305 Sprint Nationals.
An hour to the north of us on St. Rt. 7 is Raceway 7 near Conneaut. Racing is every Friday for the 7/16 mile dirt oval. Opening night is May 6th with a five division program.
Lernerville Speedway "Home of the Fab Four" is another Friday night track. One of the few tracks in the country to feature dirt tracks three major divisions 410 Sprint cars, Late Models and Big block Mods weekly along with Pro Stocks. Several major events are scheduled throughout the season.
Venango County in Western PA. is the home of Sunday night racing on the big ½ mile dirt oval known as Tri -City. Sunday May 1st is opening night for Sunday Thunder. Four divisions will be found weekly along with special events.
Asphalt fans will find Jennerstown Speedway in Somerset, Pa., a premier facility and a fast ½ mile oval. NASCAR now will sanction the track. Early season specials include May 28th in the only area appearance of the NASCAR Whelen Modified series and June 11 when the fastest short track cars on the planet The ISMA Super Modifieds take the track.
Drag racing fans will be awaiting the season opener test and tune Friday April 29 at Quaker City Motor Sports Park in Salem Oh. The IHRA sanctioned ¼ mile is filled with special events throughout the season.
So many race tracks and special events to enjoy. As exciting as racing is on TV it is so much more exciting in person. Get out and support your local race track or travel a short distance for a chance to see some of the best racing in the country close to home.
