Athletics hit 3 HRs to blast Guardians 7-1

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Colby Thomas, Zack Gelof and Tyler Soderstrom homered to back a strong start by Aaron Civale and the Athletics beat the Cleveland Guardian 7-1 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep. Thomas hit his first home run of the season, leading off the second against rookie Parker Messick (3-1) for a 1-0 lead. Rookie Chase DeLauter hit his sixth home run — and first since April 3 — going the opposite way to left field to tie it 1-all in the fifth and extend his hitting streak to eight games. DeLauter went 8 for 11 in the series. Messick retired nine in a row ...

Young finishes off wire-to-wire win at Doral

DORAL, Fla. — The only person who gave Cameron Young any trouble on Sunday was, well, Cameron Young. He called a one-stroke penalty on himself while playing the par-4 second hole, after he caused his ball to move in the fairway. And then he made par anyway. It was that sort of week: Young was unflappable and unbeatable. He went wire-to-wire alone on the lead at the Cadillac Championship, a final round of 4-under 68 getting him to 19 under for the week and six shots clear of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (68). “When the golf course is difficult, when the conditions are ...

Pirates top Reds to complete sweep

PITTSBURGH — Oneil Cruz hit a tie-breaking single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a sweep of Cincinnati with a 1-0 win on Sunday. Pinch hitter Jake Mangum worked a full count walk and Cruz followed by lacing a single to center. Griffin beat TJ Friedl’s throw home with ease as Pittsburgh responded to getting swept at home by St. Louis by taking three straight from the Reds. Gregory Soto (3-0) got ...

YOUNGSTOWN — During her freshman season at Youngstown State in 2023, there was a time when Kennedy Dean thought she might not be cut out to play Division I softball. A Winfield, W.Va., native, Dean first arrived in Youngstown as a well-regarded hitting prospect from the Mountain State after ...

Bubon returns to Harding as head coach

Sometimes the timing just works out. Dan Bubon felt as if his time was winding down at Howland. Holding the head coach position with the Tigers for the last decade, he thought things had probably run their course. Around the same time, the same position for his hometown team opened up. For the 1991 Harding graduate, the timing was too perfect. In April, Bubon was named the next head coach at Warren G. Harding High School, taking over a program he had once both played and coached for. “It was like a perfect storm at Howland,” Bubon said. “My son’s graduating this year, our ...
