13 local boxers set for ‘Baseball and Boxing’

YOUNGSTOWN — A 15-bout, all-amateur fight card is set for tonight with 13 local fighters representing teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania taking part at the Collingwood Center, formerly St. Joseph the Provider Church, 633 Porter Avenue in Campbell.

Presented by Lights Out Management and Springfield Local High School baseball, in conjunction with Badurik’s Butcher Block and Golden String Boxing, their second annual “Baseball and Boxing” show will feature fighters from three area gyms.

A 10-bell count honoring the memory Tommy Christian, the late area boxer-judge and Campbell native, will be observed while the night will also honor former Campbell Memorial baseball standouts Ken Tirpack and Wayne Zetts and boxing standout-trainer Sam Calderone.

The main event will pit Isaac Johnson against Keon Kyte of Pittsburgh in a 150-pound pairing while the co-main sends Julio Azpurua to the mat against Cleveland’s Basil Abbokkas, also at 150 pounds.

Both Johnson and Azpurua train at Golden String Boxing.

“We will have 12 exciting bouts featuring local gyms in many of the bouts,” matchmaker and Golden String trainer Tom Cordell noted. “It is going to be an action-packed night with many up-and-coming boxers on the card — an event you will not want to miss.”

Local gyms taking part include Golden String Boxing, Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing and Burnside Boxing with trainer Keith Burnside.

In addition to Johnson and Azpurua, representing Cordell’s Golden Strong Boxing will be Mohammad Hussain, who goes up against Canton’s Drew Mercer in a 170-pound scrap, Kevin Burns, when he meets Pittsburgh’s Jaise Caurilla in a 145-pound pairing, John Davis, who takes on Jaden Wise of Cleveland at 140 pounds and Ka’veon Cotton as he goes up against Juan Perez of Cleveland at 135 pounds.

Also fighting on the Golden String card will be Will Perez, who takes on Cleveland’s Griffin Jacober at 140 pounds and Virdez Evans going up against Levi Williams of South Side Boxing Club in an all-local battle.

Two other Loew proteges will be featured when Omari Garner hosts Kai Walls of Pittsburgh in a 90-pound matchup and Dontrail Burns, who is paired against Kenny Wilson of Toledo in a 95-pound tussle.

Keith Burnside’s up-and-coming fighter, Austin Gibson, will meet Braylon Lane of Cleveland at 140 pounds while Warren’s Xavier Martinez is set to take on Pittsburgh’s Nico Wilson in a 95-pound matchup.

“Lights Out Management is happy to team up with Golden String Boxing once again to bring you our Baseball and Boxing show,” added Lights Out Management’s Mike Cefalde. “We are extremely excited about honoring some of the area’s best baseball players and coaches, a boxer-trainer extraordinaire and a 10-bell count for my friend Tommy Christian’s family. This is amateur boxing at its absolute best.”

General Admission is $20, $30 for VIP chairs with tables of eight available for $400.

Doors open at 6 p.m., the first fight hits the bell at 7 p.m. and further information can be obtained by calling either 330-610-2306, 330-717-4201 or 330-720-4474.
