YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State men’s basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun will make $300,000 in annual base compensation moving forward, according to his contract extension which was obtained by the Tribune Chronicle through a FOIA request.

The deal runs through the 2027-28 season.

That figure is up from the $213,848 in base compensation he received for the 2022-23 season, which came by way of an extension he had signed in August 2022.

Also, YSU inserted a buyout into this agreement, differing from the last one. Should Calhoun depart the program before March 1, 2024, he would owe Youngstown State 200 percent of his annual base salary ($600,000) due within 60 days of terminating the contract.

That specific buyout does not extend past Feb. 29, 2024.

There also is another buyout in the event Calhoun leaves for a fellow Horizon League program, in which case he would owe 100 percent of the annual base salary “for the remainder of the current term.”

Calhoun, who was named the 2022-23 Horizon League Coach of the Year,, is 96-96 through six seasons at YSU. In 2022-23, the Penguins went 24-10, clinched the program’s first regular season Horizon League title, made it to the Horizon League Tournament semifinals for just the second time and earned an NIT berth, also the program’s first.

Under Calhoun, Youngstown State has experienced a steady upward trajectory. After going 8-24 and 12-20 in Calhoun’s first and second years, respectively, the Penguins have ripped off four consecutive winning seasons, capped by the successes of 2022-23.
