Robert Harvischak capped off a huge comeback, beating Adam Barta, 278-190, in the championship round as he captured the 42nd annual Warren Bowling Challenge on Sunday at Cortland Lanes.

It was the third title for Harvischak, who started Sunday’s eight head-to-head matches with three straight losses.

It was after that third round that Barta, also a former champion and the top scorer in 18 qualifying games over three rounds, took over first place. After beating Harvischak, 211-199, in round seven, Barta held an 83-point edge over the eventual winner.

The format included seven head-to-head matches in a round-robin format with 30 bonus points awarded to the winner of each match.

In the final round, the matchups were 1 vs. 2, 3 vs. 4, 5 vs. 6 and 7 vs. 8.

Harvischak’s comfortable margin in the final round against Barta, coupled with the 30 bonus points, left him atop the scoreboard with a 2028 total. Barta finished at 1993, James Nolen was third at 1890 and Anthony Marcello III was fourth at 1886.

Barta, Nolen and Marcello all were 6-2 in the head-to-head standings, while Harvischak won the title by going 4-4.
