Leader Nolen hangs on to top position

First-round leader James Nolen held on to the top spot — just barely — through the second round of the 41st annual Warren Challenge bowling tournament on Sunday at Champion Lanes.

Nolen had an 85-pin advantage on the field after the first round on Saturday at Freeway Lanes, and still led by 75 pins through five of the six qualifying rounds on Sunday.

But Nolen rolled a 187 in the sixth game on Sunday and Adam Barta fired off a 269 to jump past Robert Harvischak into second place, just two pins behind Nolen.

Going into the third and final qualifying round next Saturday at Cortland Lanes, Nolen has a pin total of 2,851, with Barta at 2,849 and Harvischak at 2,825. The top eight finishers after Saturday qualify for the finals next Sunday at Champion.

Defending champion Barta is a five-time winner and Harvischak won in 2015.

The rest of the top eight through two rounds: Dean Billings 2,768, Mark Lias 2,743, Scott Baillie 2,666, Rich Speicher 2,655, Jim Newbrough 2,630.

Sitting just outside the final eight are former champions Greg Martha (1995) with a score of 2,612, Jeff Czerniak (2003) with a 2,528 total and Bruce Boyd (2011) with a 2,526.

Barta led the scoring in the Sunday’s six games with a 1,460 score. He was followed by Harvischak 1,417, Lias 1,368, Martha 1,353, Billings and Baillie 1,350, Speicher 1,349 and Nolen 1,348.
