Salem seeks revenge after beating Girard

SALEM — Salem senior Abby Perry picked a memorable moment to have her best scoring quarter of her basketball career.

In her final appearance on the Cabas Gymnasium floor, Perry scored all 13 of her points in the fourth quarter to lead the Quakers to a 59-28 win over Girard on Saturday in a Div. II sectional final.

As Salem’s other four seniors — Krista Barley, Alanee Davidson-Chuck, Alivia Davidson-Chuck and Jenna McClish — each came off the floor to an ovation about halfway through the fourth quarter, Perry was in the middle of a scoring rampage and coach Sarah Hamilton was not ready to pull her off the floor quite yet.

“We just had to let her go a little longer because she was on fire,” Hamilton said. “Seeing that was nice because of that foul trouble she got into earlier.”

“I was in some foul trouble in the other three quarters, so I thought I had to make up for it,” Perry said.

The game was well in-hand for the Quakers when Perry got going, but the senior made sure she signed off her career at Cabas Gymnasium in style.

“Honestly (I didn’t really believe I could do it), but if I put my mind to it, I thought it was possible,” Perry said. “And I could not have done it without the great assists from my teammates.”

Second-seeded Salem (17-4) advances to meet seventh-seeded Kenston at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Ashtabula Lakeside High School in a Div. II district semifinal.

The Quakers are hungry for a district title after feeling the sting of a district final loss to Perry on a miracle buzzer beater last season.

“The theme of this year was ‘let’s fly’, but we’re on a revenge tour too because 4.4 seconds separated us from a district championship,” Hamilton said.

If the Quakers are going to get that revenge, it appears they have the defense to do it.

Girard (15-8) was limited to three total field goals in the second half. Salem is holding opponents to a school-record 31.6 points per game.

“We want to get revenge for what happened,” Perry said. “Obviously if we see Perry in the district final that will be a great game, but we want to get farther than that.”

The Quakers started off well against Girard thanks in part to sophomore Rylee Hutton’s seven first quarter points. Hutton went on to finish with 11 points.

“I was just excited to come out and play hard for the ‘W’,” Hutton said. “We all played well together and everyone shared the ball and knew our roles.”

Hutton also said that last season’s loss to Perry was also a motivating factor.

“We don’t want it to end like last season, so we use that as motivation,” Hutton said.

Girard had won six straight games heading into the contest. The Indians challenged Salem physically in the first half, but for the most part the visitors had trouble hanging on.

“They played hard,” Hamilton said about Girard. “The intensity of their defense was great. They really brought that pressure in the first half and made us work for everything we got. We made some adjustments at halftime to slow them down a bit on offense in second half, but overall they were a great team.”

Abbie Rafferty and Seyhan Dede had eight points each for the Indians.

Salem was also aided by strong nine-point efforts from Kaylee Carlisle and Krista Barley.
