Eagles fall to Brookfield in straight sets

BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Warriors got the luck of the draw and were able to host their Division IV Sectional Semifinal Tuesday night.

But, they did have to play the Valley Christian Eagles for the second time in eight days.

The results were roughly the same against a short-handed Valley Christian squad as they completed the three set sweep, 25-16, 25-14, and 25-13.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries this year,” Valley Christian coach Ron Voitus said. “Some of my kids were out with COVID for 10 days. That was sort of a makeshift varsity roster. They played well at times. I’m very proud of them for what they did. There were some freshmen on the floor at the end of the game. I have no problem. They did a very very good job tonight. They didn’t give it away. They battled. I know we would have liked to have done better.”

Still, at least early on in that first set, the Eagles were putting up a fight and made things challenging for the Warriors (15-6) as they raced out to an early 7-3 lead and were tied up at 10 all.

“I think they came out really really hard,” Brookfield coach Brie Harbison said. “I love volleyball where it’s scrappy. Where you have to earn a point. I think that they did a really good job of that. I told my girls, that’s what I want us to look like. I want us to be a team that’s scrappy that everybody has to earn a point.”

Then, senior leaders Anna Reichart, Bailey Hackett, and Bailey O’Brien settled down their teammates as they outscored the Eagles 15-6 down the stretch.

“I thought their headspace was really good,” Harbison said. “We seemed really focused, ready to go out, and show up. We worked out some kinks tonight though so I’m happy about that. I wanted to see where we needed to improve and practice where we needed our game to improve. Nonetheless, I got three great seniors, and they really helped carry the team tonight.”

That play carried over into the second set where serving came in handy when things still seemed tight at 15-10 with Valley Christian (1-18) hanging around.

Lauren Shingledecker changed the complexion of the set as she served seven straight points to make it 22-10.

“Our service game is what we’ve been working on a lot,” Harbison said. “It’s sort of an area where we’re struggling. We have the potential to be a really, really great serving team, but it’s how we show up that day. Today we showed our premium services and I was really proud of them. I hope that they can continue to show up with it.”

It showed up again in the third set as Hackett served 10 straight points to turn a 9-4 game into a 19-4 lead that Valley Christian couldn’t overcome as they fell 25-13.
