BOARDMAN — It was the performance the Boardman Spartans needed before they set off on a rough three game road trip.

About the only blemish was a fumble on the opening kickoff that they still recovered.

It was definitely the Spartans’ night.

All in all, the Spartans (4-1) had 351 yards of total offense in the first half as they cruised to a 62-14 win over East.

“It’s exactly where we wanted to be right here and go through these last five games,” Boardman coach Seth Antram said.

They ran five offensive possessions which resulted in 34 first half points. No punts.

Add a Cam Thompson 46 yard punt return and it was all Boardman in the first half.

The 62 points is a school record.

“Everything clicked,” Antram said. “We honestly didn’t expect that. We were going to try to grind a little bit and take what they were giving us. We were able to pop a few and score a little quicker than we had anticipated.

“We wanted to come out and be physical. We wanted to establish the running game but also spread it around a little bit.”

The Spartans struck quickly when Sean O’Horo took it in from 28 yards out to make it 7-0 less than two minutes into the game.

After an East three-and-out, Cam Thompson returned the ensuing punt 46 yards to increase the lead to 14-0 with 9:35 left in the opening quarter.

He added an 82 kickoff return in the third quarter.

East (1-4) started to find some success on their second possession behind the arm and legs of Andrew Blackmon as they moved it 28 yards before the drive stalled.

Starting at their own 12, Boardman methodically drove down the field with a steady dose of O’Horo before Thomas punctuated the drive with a 46 yard run to make it 21-0 halfway through the opening quarter.

East again moved the ball from their own 27 to the Boardman 28 thanks again to Blackmon and a Boardman penalty before the drive ended on downs with Blackmon’s two yard pass to Frank Harris.

The Spartans increased their lead to 28-0 on Fernando Ortiz’s four yard run with 9:47 left in the second quarter.

East went three-and-out on their ensuing possession.

Boardman punctuated their first half performance with Thomas’ 40 yard pass to Hightower and O’Horo’s 63 yard run to make it 41-0 at the half.

O’Horo ran for 134 yards in the first half with Thomas adding 70 on the ground and another 122 through the air. Neither played in the second half.

It was Thomas’ second game back. The Purdue commit provides an extra dimension for the Spartans.

“With Terence back there and we can really open it up a lot,” Thompson said.

Blackmon eventually got East on the scoreboard to start the second half as he found Mario Wright on a 69 yard pass to make it 41-8 at the 10:02 mark of the third quarter.

Blackmon was the one bright spot for the Golden Bears as he had 137 yards on the ground and 172 through the air.

Still, the Boardman defense kept him in check for most of the night.

“They did,” O’Horo said. “They’ve buckled down all year. Played physical, tough, and made key plays.”

“The defense did a great job of keeping him contained,” Boardman senior defensive tackle Cortland Love said. “We didn’t let him impact the game. We knew they were going to come out and try to throw the ball and run with him a little bit, and the defense really put it together and held him to where we needed to hold him.”
