Canfield, Mooney boys win; WR girls get big victory

GIRLS BASKETBALL

¯ WESTERN RESERVE 63, CHIPPEWA 57: DOYLESTOWN — The Blue Devils posted a big victory on Saturday, knocking off perennial power Chippewa on the road. Western Reserve (5-0) opened a 21-15 lead after one quarter and maintained control, leading 34-29 at halftime and 45-39 after three quarters.

WR had great scoring balance led by Danielle Vuletich with 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Contributing 11 points each were Kennedy Miller, Alyvia Hughes and Lisa Eichert, while Olivia Pater scored 10. Miller had six assists and Brooke Schantz had four.

¯ CARDINAL MOONEY 54, FITCH 44: YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney outscored Fitch 17-10 in the fourth quarter to finish off a come-from-behind victory on Saturday. The Falcons (0-2) led 12-9 after one quarter and 23-21 at halftime before the Cardinals (3-1) used a 16-11 third quarter to take a 37-35 lead into the final frame.

Mooney was led by Maria Fire with 15 points and Alaina Scavina with 14. Gia Diorio added eight points.

The Falcons were paced by Madison McCann with 16 points, Zayda Creque with 10 and Jocelyn Jourdan with eight.

The teams face each other again on Monday night in Austintown.

¯ URSULINE 38, BOARDMAN 32: YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline gained control with a 14-7 second quarter which gave the Irish (2-1) a 22-17 halftime lead, then followed with a 10-7 advantage in the third stanza for a 32-24 lead headed into the final quarter.

Ursuline got 13 points from Rachel Fabry, 12 from Anisah Moorman and nine from Alayna Smith.

Boardman (1-3) was led by Katie Stamp with nine points and 10 rebounds. Gia Triviri added eight points and Reagan Burkey contributed seven points and eight rebounds.

¯ WEST BRANCH 44, CANTON SOUTH 26: BELOIT — The West Branch defense held Canton South (5-2, 2-2) to single digits in three of the four quarters on the way to victory in an Eastern Buckeye Conference game. The Warriors (6-2, 2-1) opened a 28-18 halftime lead after an 11-11 first quarrter. WB led 34-23 after three quarters.

Emma Egli scored 10 points for West Branch and Sydney Mercer added seven points and seven rebounds.

¯ COLUMBIANA 51, GRAND VALLEY 34: COLUMBIANA — A 14-4 second quarter put the Clippers ahead 29-15 at halftime and Columbiana went on to the victory behind good scoring balance. Tori Long scored 18 points, Grace Witmer had 14, Cassie Spaite added nine and Camille Zentner contributed eight.

Long also had six steals and four assists and Witmer added four assists and four steals.

Grand Valley was paced by Courtney Hivick with nine points and Alexis Mahaffey and Mariah Riffett who scored eight points each.

¯ CAMPBELL 42, HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN 37: CAMPBELL — The Red Devils outscored Heartland 17-7 in the third quarter, wiping out a 16-13 halftime deficit.

Heartland Christian (2-4) was paced by Madi Matthewswith 28 points and 22 rebounds. Jorden Webb added five steals.

WRESTLING

¯ FITCH SWEEPS IN DUALS EVENT: AUSTINTOWN — The Falcons won comfortably in all five of its matches as it hosted its own duals event on Saturday. Fitch beat Middlefield Cardinal, 72-6; Dover, 47-12; Canton South, 57-15; Crestview, 61-12; and Parma Normandy, 70-9.

Five Falcons won all five of their matches: Jacob Ferguson, Arthur Croom, Colin Roberts, Tyler Lintner and Jacob Smail who claimed his 100th career victory. Six other Fitch wrestlers won four matches: Alec Herman, James Koslik, David Shannon, Donovan Oliver, AJ Byrd and Dom Zemko.

¯ SOUTH RANGE IN QUADRANGULAR: MACEDONIA — The Raiders won two matches, losing to host Nordonia, 37-27, and beating Wooster, 57-24, and Parma Padua, 72-0.

Five South Range wrestlers won all three of their matches: Gavin Pahanish, Raymond Cmil, Cooper Cleevely, Logan Cormell and Michael Lally. Five more won twice on the day: Hunter Newell, Michael Markulin, Clayton Kramer, Naseem Maali and Jacob Starkey.

BOYS BASKETBALL

¯ CANFIELD 51, MARLINGTON 48: ALLIANCE — Canfield had good scoring balance and great defense in a key second quarter. The Cardinals (2-3) trailed 19-14 after one quarter before holding the Dukes to just three points in the second, building a 25-22 halftime lead. The third quarter finished at 16-16 and the fourth quarter was 10-10 as Canfield held on for the win.

Harry Slaven led the Cardinal attack with 14 points. Nik Pantelakis added 10 and Ryan Petro and Eddie Russo scored eight apiece.

¯ CARDINAL MOONEY 66, CAMPBELL 30: CAMPBELL — The Cardinals jumped out to a 20-9 first-quarter lead and held leads of 33-15 at halftime and 60-21 after three quarters. Mooney (4-1) was led by Thojas Fire with 20 points and Jack Pepperney with 12.

Campbell got eight points from C. Michaels and seven from C. Jones.
