Sylak leads area golfers at state

SUNBURY — Mineral Ridge’s Jake Sylak finished tied for 15th to lead area golfers on the second and final day of the state golf tournament.

Sylak, competing in Division III, carded a second-round 75 after an 84 on Day 1 for a 159 total at NorthStar Golf Course in Sunbury. He finished 13 shots off the lead and medalist Brookston Hummel of Berlin Hiland, whose 146 (74 and 72) was one stroke better than two second-place finishers.

McDonald’s Caleb Domitrovich, also competing in Division III, finished with a 165, tied for 25th. He followed a first-round 83 with an 82.

In Division II, which was played on the Scarlet Course on the campus of Ohio State University, West Branch’s Aiden Wiesemann finished 35th. He recorded rounds of 85 and 84 for a 169. Poland’s Luke Nord placed 63rd with rounds of 89 and 96 (185). Columbus Academy’s Stephen Ma was the Division II champ with a 144 (71 and 73). He won by three strokes over Davis Gochenouer of Kettering Archbishop Alter.

On the girls side, Mooney’s Alyssa Rapp finished 30th with a rounds of 89 and 86 (175) at the Gray Course at Ohio State. Jami Morris of Shaker Heights Laurel carded a 2-under 138, winning by five strokes over Sydney Leyerle of Gibsonburg.
