Canfield, Struthers, Poland dominate foes

¯ CANFIELD 34, NOTRE DAME-CATHEDRAL LATIN 7: CANFIELD — Chris Sammarone had eight carries for 146 yards and two first-half scores as the Cardinals moved to 2-0 with a dominating performance over the Lions.

Canfield has outscored its opponents 57-6 in the first two games.

Cardinals sophomore quarterback Broc Lowry was a perfect 9-of-9 for 112 yards and two scores before intermission.

Ethan Fletcher added 12 carries for 95 yards for Canfield.

Jacob Koenig got ND-CL (0-1) on the board and prevented the shutout with 9:0 left in the fourth quarter. He found Adam Zakrajsek on a 48-yard pass for the final scoring in the game.

¯ STRUTHERS 20, LAKEVIEW 0: STRUTHERS — A big second half and a stifling defense lifted Struthers over the Bulldogs in a Northeast-8 Conference battle.

Tyler Sanchez powered the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1) with 153 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts. The game was tied at halftime before Alec Gryzb ran in from 16 yards out late in the third quarter.

The Wildcats, who held Lakeview to 29 total yards, scored again midway through the fourth quarter on a blocked punt, and they put the game away with a 9-yard TD run by Sanchez.

¯ POLAND 34, NILES 7: NILES — Poland put together a big first half and dominated the Red Dragons in a NE-8 matchup.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1) went up 10-0 on a 33-yard field goal by Jack Brant and a 15-yard run by quarterback Jack Fulton, who also completed 6-of-8 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. Niles (1-1, 1-1) responded with a 21-yard TD pass from Zack Leonard.

Poland took over from there, with Bryce Barringer scoring on a 23-yard run to make it 17-7. Barringer finished with 64-yard rushing on 12 carries. Fulton then hit Andrew Centofanti on a 50-yard pass, and Brant added a 36-yard field goal to put the Bulldogs up, 27-7, at halftime.

Leonard completed 15-of-29 passes for 191 yards for Niles, but the Red Dragons averaged just 2 yards per carry (52 yards on 26 carries).

¯ HUBBARD 21, JEFFERSON 16: JEFFERSON — A defensive stand by Hubbard in the final minute helped the Eagles hold on for a Northeast-8 Conference victory over Jefferson.

The Falcons (0-2, 0-2) blocked a punt and recovered the ball at the Hubbard 5-yard line with 1 minute remaining. Jefferson ran four plays and got 1 yard, with a pass being knocked down in the end zone on the Falcons’ final play.

Koby Krisuk threw two touchdowns for Hubbard (2-0, 2-0). Krisuk connected with Brant Borawiec for a 12-yard TD in the first quarter, but Jefferson responded with a safety and then a 13-yard TD pass from Grant Hitchcock to Trenton Hodge for a 9-7 lead.

The Eagles answered as Krisuk ran for a 29-yard TD in the third quarter. He finished with a team-high 82 yards rushing and also completed 5-of-13 passes for 76 yards and two TDs. The eventual game-winning pass was a 57-yard strike from Krisuk to Andrew Frank with 9:25 left in the fourth quarter.

Jefferson scored on a 19-yard pass from Hitchcock to Hodge with 2:51 remaining to set up the finish.

¯ McDONALD 48, LOWELLVILLE 12: McDONALD — Dominic Schadl had more than180 yards of total offense and four touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils past the Rockets in this Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference, Scarlet Tier battle.

Schadl had 17 carries for 165 yards and three touchdowns, all coming in the first half as McDonald (2-0, 2-0 MVAC Scarlet) took a 28-6 lead into intermission.

The Blue Devils’ Wing-T offense was quite dominant in their home opener with a 370 to 2 rushing advantage.

Nathan Gilligan had nine carries for 104 yards and one score for McDonald.

Vinny Ballone paced Lowellville (0-2, 0-2) with 17-of-37 for 205 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Bunofskys were his favorite targets as Brady had 4 receptions for 95 yards and Cole had 8 catches for 71 yards. Each had a touchdown.

¯ CRESTVIEW 59, CAMPBELL 0: COLUMBIANA — Ethan Powell had 10 carries for 131 yards and two scores as the Rebels blanked the Red Devils in this MVAC Gray Tier contest.

Anthony Cusick was 5-of-8 for 111 yards and a score.

Crestview (2-0) dominated total yardage 493 to 34.

Andrei Wilder paced Campbell (0-2) with six carries for 18 yards.
