Spartans continue their run

Noah Basista. Matthew DunLany. They are two standouts in the Boardman High School boys swimming program.

Names have changed over the years, but the model of consistency has never wavered.

Coach Carlo Cordon saw the model former coach Terry O’Halloran had for the Spartans, even trickling down to the youth program — building arguably the best swim program in the Mahoning Valley.

Boardman had at least a dozen male athletes and more than a half dozen female athletes compete in the Division I district swimming and diving competition.

Cordon said the Spartans focus on consistency. Expectations are always high with the focus on winning league titles in the All-American Conference and NEAC with teams from northeast Ohio.

Cordon said the work starts during the summer with his assistants Chad DeAngelo and Ryan Ebie. There are swimming programs for young athletes, as young as six.

“We’re blessed with talent,” Cordon said. “If you don’t have talent, we’re not going to go anywhere. We kind of track these kids since they were young.”

These current Boardman athletes are products of the youth programs, fearless athletes to say the least.

“They’re willing to run through a brick wall for us,” Cordon said. “They’re willing to do anything.”

Cordon is well aware this district meet is as tough of competition Boardman will face all season.

“This district meet is a lot more pressure cooking than anybody else,” Cordon said. “Even when Terry was coach, we as coaches learned how to rest some of these boys and some of the girls. The kids we have going to districts this week, we didn’t rest them as much as we did last week.

“They were still pushing pretty hard with the training going on in sectional. With this district meet, now they’re starting to rest.”

Mentally, these swimmers are prepared.

“There’s a lot of mental training about not letting the worries come in, worrying about the things that you can’t control, who you’re next to or what lane you’re in,” Cordon said. “That starts from Day 1 and that gives us the edge, too. It’s not just the physical training, but we work on the mental side of athletics, too.”

Basista, who placed eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke last season, is heading to Bucknell University next season. DunLany will swim for the Merchant Marines. There are other swimmers heading to either Youngstown State University or John Carroll University.

“I have some guys that are continuing on, which is fantastic,” Cordon said. “It says a lot about their love of the sport.”

It also says a lot about the Boardman swimming program.

Starting at $3.23/week.
