Better-seeded teams move on to districts

¯ WESTERN RESERVE 58, VALLEY CHRISTIAN 42: BERLIN CENTER — Danielle Vuletich had a huge double-double and the second-seeded Blue Devils rolled past the 10th-seeded Eagles in a Division IV sectional bracket final.

The 6-foot-2 southpaw scored 33 points, snagged 19 rebounds and totally dominated the paint for the hosts, who improved to 20-4 and will play third-seeded Newton Falls in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mineral Ridge.

Alyssa Serensky supplied six points, five steals and four assists for Western Reserve which led just 16-10 after the first period before stretch the lead to 34-17 at halftime and 53-30 through three periods.

Kristen Gill scored 19 points and DiAndra Tensley added 10 for the Eagles, who finished 5-17.

¯ LIBERTY 61, UNITED 23: LIBERTY — The top-seeded Leopards led the eighth-seeded Golden Eagles 25-10 at halftime and then put the finishing touches on the vistors with a 26-9 third-quarter scoring advantage in a Division III sectional bracket final.

Shar’Da Williamson scored 18 points and Cianna Smith scored 17 for Liberty, which improved 19-4. Allyson Jones added 10 points for the Leopards, who will play fourth-seeded Crestview in a district semifinal at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Struthers.

United, which finished 14-10, was led by Madison Kibler’s six points.

¯ McDONALD 75, HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN 21: McDONALD — Sophia Constantino led a powerful Blue Devil offense in a big win over Heartland Christian to advance to the Division IV Mineral Ridge District semifinals.

Constantino led McDonald with 18 points. Molly Howard scored 15 points, Maddy Howard scored 14 points and Lucy Wolford added 13.

Sydney Ogden led the Lions with 13 points.

The Blue Devils move on to face Jackson-Milton.

¯ CRESTVIEW 56, ROOTSTOWN 44: COLUMBI-ANA — The Rebels advance to district play with a win over Rootstown.

Crestview was led by Krista Perry who had 17 points. Tanner Hoffer scored 12 and Addison Bandy added 10.

Perry also brought down four rebounds and had three steals.

The Rebels led 13-8 after the first quarter and continued to pile on the points throughout the rest of the game.

Crestview plays Liberty in the Struthers District semifinals on Wednesday.

¯ CHAMPION 44, MINERAL RIDGE 27: CHAMPION — Top-seeded Champion overcame a sluggish start and used balanced scoring to down the eighth-seeded Rams in a Division III sectional bracket final.

The Golden Flashes improved to 19-4 and will play fourth-seeded LaBrae in a district semifinal at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview. It will mark the third meeting between the All-American Conference, Blue Tier foes. Brooke Whitt scored 14 points to pace Champion. Emma Gumont and Ava Howell scored nine apiece and Savannah Dodrill added eight points for the Flashes, who were just 12-for-23 from the free-throw line.

Mineral Ridge, which finished 12-12, trailed 10-6, 18-10 and 29-14 at the quarter stoppages. Candice Miller scored 14 points for the Rams.

BOYS BASKETBALL

¯ WELLSVILLE 89, EAST PALESTINE 56: WELLSVILLE — Zion Figley scored 12 points for the Bulldogs in a losing effort against Wellsville.

Figley had a team-high with Brandon Turcola scoring 11 and Johnathan Bertovitch adding 10.

The Tigers were led by Luke Green who had 29 points and Darien Suggs with 28.

SWIMMING

Boardman’s Noah Basista competed in two events in the Division I finals of the state swimming and diving championships on Saturday, finishing seventh and eighth.

Basista finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.45 seconds and eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.70 seconds.

The Spartan swimmers also had two relay teams in Canton with Boardman’s 200 medley relay team placing 12th overall. The team consisted of River Flatley, Basista, Matthew DunLany and Will Linker and finished with a time of 1:36.05.

Boardman also was in the 400 freestyle relay in which it finished 13th. The team of Linker, Jordan Stackpole, DunLany and Basista finished with a time of 3:09.90, beating their preliminary time by two seconds.

As a team, Boardman finished 17th overall.
