Ursuline boys beat JFK; Poland, Struthers girls win

¯ URSULINE 59, JOHN F. KENNEDY 50: WARREN — A big first quarter was enough to propel the Irish to a non-conference victory over John F. Kennedy.

Ursuline took a 20-12 first-quarter lead — thanks in part to four of its eight 3-pointers — and never trailed from there. Daysean Harris scored eight of his game-high 15 points in the opening period and sank two of his three 3-pointers. Brady Shannon and Terrence Pankey added each for the Irish

The Eagles cut the lead to six entering the fourth quarter, but Ursuline outscored them, 15-10, to seal the victory. The teams combined to make 29-of-51 free throws.

GIRLS GAMES

¯ POLAND 48, GIRARD 30: GIRARD — Poland took over in the middle quarters and remained unbeaten in registering a Northeast-8 Conference victory over the Indians. The Bulldogs led 9-5 after the first quarter and went a 19-5 run in the second to secure a commanding 18-point halftime lead. Jackie Grisdale scored six of her game-high 15 points in the second quarter. The Bulldogs (4-0, 3-0) removed all doubt with a strong third quarter, led by Connie Cougras, who scored seven of her 10 points in the frame.

Marissa Cave paced the Indians (2-4, 2-1) with 12 points.

¯ STRUTHERS 53, JEFFERSON 44: JEFFERSON — Struthers’ Heike Kaurschill scored eight of her 13 points in a decisive second-quarter by the Wildcats.

Struthers trailed, 11-9, after one quarter but went on an 18-2 run in the second to take control of this Northeast-8 Conference clash. Emma Elia led the Wildcats (3-3, 2-1) with 14 points, and Chloe Neider contributed 10 more.

¯ SOUTH RANGE 55, HUBBARD 30: BEAVER TOWNSHIP — Host South Range bolted to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter and then used a 31-5 scoring advantage in the middle quarters to pull away. Izzy Lamparty scored 16 points to leadthe Raiders, who held the Eagles scoreless in the second period and led 30-9 at intermision.

Hubbard was led by Toshe Stone’s 11 points.

¯ WESTERN RESERVE 65, MINERAL RIDGE 49: MINERAL RIDGE — A big first quarter allowed Western Reserve to run away with a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference matchup.

The trio of Olivia Pater, Danielle Vuletich and Alyssa Serensky combined for 49 of the Blue Devils’ 65 points. Vuletich scored six of her 16 points in the first quarter, when Western Reserve ( went on a 19-5 run. Pater scored a team-high 18 and Serensky added 15.

Mineral Ridge rallied for a 19-11 advantage in the third quarter to pull within 46-38, but the Blue Devils closed out the game on a 19-11 run. Aleka Harkins poured in a game-high 25, going 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Candice Miller added 11 (including three 3s) for the Rams.

¯ JACKSON-MILTON 77, SEBRING 35: SEBRING — Abby Spalding and Chelsea Williams combined for 29 points and 11 Rams scored in the rout.

The Blue Jays led 18-6 after the first quarter, 32-15 at halftime and 57-21 entering the final quarter, as Spalding scored 16 points and Williams added 13 points. Grace McDevitt added nine points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Jackson-Milton, which improved to 3-2 overall.

¯ LEETONIA 61, EAST PALESTINE 49: LEETONIA — The Bears used a 19-10 first-quarter scoring margin and battled host East Palestine pretty even thereafter to improve to 2-3 overall.

Leetonia, which led 29-19 at halftime and 45-35 entering the fourth period, placed four players in double-digit scoring. Anna Buffone led the way with 14 points, followed by Allison Francosky (13), Taran Ferry (12) and Ella Gregorino (10).

The Bulldogs also had four players in double figures, as Payton Sherry and Joclyn Fristik both scored 11 and Patience Champney and Morgan Rutledge both had 10.

¯ WATERLOO 49, LOWELLVILLE 37: LOWELLVILLE — Waterloo shut down the Rockets in the second quarter and pulled away in the fourth for a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference victory.

Lowellville (1-3) trailed just 12-10 after the first 8 minutes, but the Vikings (3-2) outscored the Rockets, 11-3, in the second quarter. Lowellville pulled within 34-29 to start the fourth quarter, but again, Waterloo responded, holding a 15-8 advantage.

Samantha Kelly paced the Rockets with 13 points, including a game-high three 3-pointers. Waterloo’s Brooke Waldeck led all scorers with 23.
