Soccer, volleyball in district games this week

Girls soccer teams get the 2019 fall sports district week started today with all three divisions playing semifinal games.

Today’s winners will be back in action on Thursday evening for district championship games. Those winners will advance to the regional level of play as one of just 16 teams remaining in the state in each division.

Two number 1 seeds, Canfield in Division II and Springfield in Division III, highlight today’s games. The Cardinals face fourth-seeded Poland at Canfield at 7 p.m.

District semifinal games, like the sectional games last week, are played at the home site of the better-seeded team. Thursday’s district finals will be played at neutral sites.

Springfield plays host to fifth-seeded Canton Central Catholic.

Three Mahoning County two seeds also will host games today. Boardman faces Marietta in the Division I district, and Ursuline — vs. Warren JFK — and South Range — vs. Akron Manchester — also are in action.

Fourth-seeded Austintown Fitch travels to Massillon Jackson in Division I.

In volleyball, fifth-seeded Fitch faces top-seeded Canton GlenOak Tuesday night in the Division I district at Alliance.

The other three volleyball divisions play their semifinals on Wednesday. Second-seeded Canfield goes against third-seeded Salem in Division II at West Branch, third-seeded South Range faces seventh-seeded Lake Center Christian in Division III at Salem, and fourth-seeded Springfield meets top-seeded Mineral Ridge in Division IV at Columbiana.

Volleyball district title games are scheduled Saturday afternoon.

The boys soccer district semifinal schedule is opposite that of volleyball. Divisions II and III play on Tuesday and Division I on Wednesday.

As in girls soccer, Fitch visits Massillon Jackson in Division I. The Falcons are seeded fourth and the Polar Bears first.

On Tuesday, No. 1 seed South Range is at home against Cardinal Mooney, seeded fourth, in Division III.

In Division II, second-seeded Poland entertains third-seeded Lakeview and No. 4 Ursuline travels to top-seeded Howland.

The boys soccer title games are scheduled Saturday afternoon.
