Canfield girls have new goals
Some seniors on the Canfield High School girls soccer team believe there is unfinished business to attend to this week.
The business of reaching the program’s first-ever state tournament begins at 7 tonight at Streetsboro when the Cardinals battle Chagrin Falls in a Division II regional semifinal.
“This year reminds me of our sophomore year,” said senior Hannah Stein about the 2017 season that ended with a 2-0 loss to Mentor Lake Catholic in a regional final. “It feels good to make it back to the regional. That was an awesome year, but now we’ve got to get to the next step. A lot of us have played club ball for years and this is our final chance together.”
Mentor Lake Catholic was the state runner-up in 2017.
The Cardinals are 17-2 and were ranked fourth in the final state poll. They have outscored their opponents 56-18 and have posted eight shutouts.
Chagrin Falls is 16-2-1 and was ranked 17th in the final state poll.
The winner will play either Copley (14-4-1) or Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (11-7-1) in a regional final 7 p.m. Saturday at a site to be determined. Copley was ranked third.
Stein has scored 29 goals to lead the Cardinals, but coach Phil Simone has been pleased with the contributions across the board.
“Hannah has easily been our leading scorer, but Morgan Carey, Marissa Ieraci, Chloe Kalina and Alli Malinky are all very capable scorers and are involved heavily in the offense,” he said. “They’re all unselfish and have good vision.
“Then we’ve got Ally Stein, Hannah’s twin, at center back and she’s had a fantastic season leading us back there. I think we’re pretty talented and we can beat anybody when we play well. When we haven’t been on top of our game, we keep our great work ethic and have been able to grind out wins as well.”
Canfield lost to second-ranked Mansfield Madison 5-0 on Sept. 7 in the fifth game of the season. The Cardinals then won 10 in a row before losing 4-1 to Medina in the regular-season finale Oct. 12. Medina was ranked seventh in Division I in the final poll.
“There are no easy games by the time you reach regionals,” Simone said. “But I like the way we’re playing and I like tournament time, especially at this level, because teams can’t just sit back and hope for a tie. It leads to a more-open style of play and that suits our game well.”
Chagrin Falls is led by Peyton Gellin with eight goals. Sarah Burgess leads the team with eight assists.
Ally Stein and the Canfield back line will be looking to aid sophomore keeper Bayann Jadallah.
“We’ve been working hard with our defensive shape and I think we’re prepared for it,” Stein said. “They’re (Chagrin) very athletic and fast and they combine well. Bayann has really improved and her confidence has grown all season with every shutout, but we’re hoping to make it easy for her anyway.”
