Mooney girls win sectional crown

The Cardinal Mooney girls golf team began its quest to return to the Division II state tournament by capturing the sectional title Thursday at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard.

The Cardinals shot a 338 to beat runner-up Poland by 16 strokes, as the top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district tournament Tuesday at Sable Creek Golf Club in Hartville. Hubbard (385) and East Palestine (397) were the other qualifying teams.

Mooney was led by junior Jayne Bernard, who was medalist with a 77. Grace Ogden (83), Alyssa Rapp (86) and Alexandria Patrone (92) rounded out the team scoring.

Carly Ungaro paced Poland with an 86, which tied Rapp for fourth place overall. Also contributing for the Bulldogs were Kristen Shaw (91), Sophia Yurich (93) and Hannah Ogden (94).

For Hubbard, Jacquelyn Adler carded an 82 to place second overall. The Eagles also counted scores from Noelle Trobek (92), Lena Dunkerley (103) and Amanda Trinckes (108).

The individual district qualifiers were Springfieldás Madison Horvath (87), Salemás Kelly Hutton (91), Crestviewás Emily Hill (95) and Columbianaás Morgan Dunlap (97). Dunlap won a first-hole playoff against Taylor Susany of Struthers and Erika Hankavich of Ursuline.
