Hezonja signs with Cavaliers
CLEVELAND -- Forward Mario Hezonja will return to the NBA for the first time in six years after signing a one-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Hezonja has played the last four years for Real Madrid and was the Spanish League MVP after averaging 13.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists this past season.
The 31-year-old from Croatia was the fifth overall pick by Orlando in the 2015 NBA draft and played five seasons for the Magic, New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers. He averaged 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Hezonja also played in the EuroLeague for Panathinaikos in Greece and Russia's UNICS Kazan.
Cleveland -- which advanced to the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 2018 -- had a need for depth in the front court after the departures of Dean Wade and Keon Ellis during free agency.
Penguins, Novak ink extension
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins signed dependable forward Tommy Novak to a three-year contract extension on Friday. The deal, which begins during the 2027-28 season, carries an average annual value of $4.65 million.
The 29-year-old Novak collected 16 goals and 26 points in 82 games last season while helping the Penguins return to the playoffs following a three-year absence.
Novak, who bounced between the second and third line during his first full season in Pittsburgh, had been scheduled to become a free agent next summer. The extension instead keeps him in the fold for the rest of the decade and positions him to be part of the club's nucleus as it transitions out of the twilight of the Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin/Kris Letang era.
Falcons DC Ulbrich's wife dies at 48
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons announced that Cristina Ulbrich, the wife of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, has died. She was 48.
The team said in a statement Thursday night announcing her death that Cristina Ulbrich had been dealing with cancer. Jeff Ulbrich was not with the team during the Falcons' first three days of training camp.
"Cristina will always be an important part of our Falcons family," team owner Arthur M. Blank said in a statement. "My heart is with Jeff, Samantha, Jax, Jace and the entire Ulbrich family during this unimaginable time. It was always evident how deeply Cristina loved her family and how fiercely she supported them."
Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski expressed his condolences while speaking with reporters Friday, calling the situation "heartbreaking."
"It's a difficult time for the Ulbrich family. It's a difficult time for the Falcons family. It's a difficult time for everybody who knew and loved Cristina," he said. "We, like any family, will support Jeff and the kids, and we'll put our arms around him and the kids -- literally and as an organization."
Stefanski said Jeff Ulbrich, in his second season as the Falcons' defensive coordinator, will address the media when the time is appropriate and that the team and franchise are with him and his three children "in the short term and long term."
The 49-year-old coach played 10 seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers as a linebacker and special teamer.
After his playing career ended after the 2009 season, Ulbrich got into coaching and served as an assistant for Seattle, UCLA, a first stint with Atlanta and then the New York Jets, where he was the defensive coordinator for four years and served as the interim head coach for the final 12 games of the 2024 season.
CBS places Romo on leave after arrest
Tony Romo has been placed on leave from his role as the lead analyst on CBS' NFL coverage following his arrest last week on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.
CBS Sports announced Friday that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was on leave "until further notice." JJ Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as CBS Sports' lead NFL team during Romo's absence.
Romo, 46, was arrested July 23 after he was stopped while driving south on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office report, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests before getting taken into custody, booked and released.
He has a court date set for Sept. 21.
CBS Sports' announcement comes after citations released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office indicated an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage was found in the passenger's side of Romo's black Jeep during an inventory before it was towed.
According to the citations, police stopped Romo after he was seen passing cars in a gore area, which separates interstate traffic from cars entering from an on-ramp. Police said Romo questioned what a gore area was during the stop.
Body camera footage released earlier this week showed Romo telling deputies he had been coming from a golf course and was on his way "to visit grandma and grandpa" when he was stopped. A deputy told Romo he suspected him of being impaired because he had "red glassy eyes" and an "odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage."
Young shares lead at Rocket Classic
DETROIT (AP) -- Cameron Young birdied seven of his first eight holes in the second round of the Rocket Classic and thought he had a shot at the lowest score in PGA Tour history.
Young cooled off with two birdies on his back nine in a bogey-free round, closing with a Detroit Golf Club-record tying 61 to reach 10 under for the tournament to tie Patrick Cantlay (66) and Patrick Fishburn (66) atop the leaderboard Friday.
Young, the No. 3 player in the world with three wins this season, shot a 59 in 2024 at the Travelers Championship and had a chance to join Furyk with multiple sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour.
