Mets claim Guards' Arias off waivers
PITTSBURGH -- The New York Mets claimed infielder Gabriel Arias off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians on Friday.
Arias is out of minor-league options and must remain on the Mets' active roster or be subject to waivers again. He is expected to join the Mets on Saturday night for their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 26-year-old Arias hit .244 with five home runs in 42 games this season for the Guardians. He started 24 games at third base, 10 at shortstop and two at second base. He is a .219 career hitter over five seasons, all with Cleveland, and has 30 home runs.
Indiana's Wyatt returns for 5th year
Defensive lineman Kellan Wyatt has decided to return for his fifth season with the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.
Wyatt becomes the second starting linemen from last season's title run to come back since last week's U.S. District Court ruling in Colorado granting players from the 2022 high school graduating class one more year of eligibility. Coach Curt Cignetti confirmed Wednesday that all-Big Ten honorable mention defensive end Stephen Daley also had returned following the ruling.
The NCAA plans to appeal the court decision.
Wyatt started the first seven games in 2025 before a season-ending knee injury. The transfer from Maryland finished his first year at Indiana with 27 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2 1/2 sacks. He has 11 career sacks but was not selected in April's NFL draft, which along with the court ruling opened the door for his return.
The addition of Wyatt to an already deep, experienced group of defensive linemen could make Indiana's defensive front even stronger.
Indiana now has four defensive linemen who started regularly last season -- Wyatt, Daley, Tyrique Tucker and Mario Landino -- back. Plus, Cignetti has added veteran transfers Tobi Osunsanmi and Chiddi Obiazor from Kansas State and Josh Burnham from Notre Dame to a position group that returns its top five sack leaders.
"Like you said, getting off on the quarterback, I think that's one of the best things about our defense," said linebacker Rolijah Hardy, who led the team with eight sacks last season. "Try to help the back end, the DBs by getting after them so they don't have that much time, so I think returning those five is really big for us."
Daley suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Hoosiers' celebration following their 13-10 victory over Ohio State, giving Indiana its first league crown since 1967. He missed all three playoff games as the Hoosiers won their first national championship and became the first major college football program to post a 16-0 mark since the 1890s.
Despite recording 5 1/2 sacks, a Big Ten-leading 19 tackles for loss -- No. 3 in the Football Bowl Subdivision -- in his first season with the Hoosiers, he also was undrafted.
Missouri added to 1960 champs
WASHINGTON -- Four teams had claims to the 1960 national championship in college football. The U.S. Senate is adding Missouri to that list.
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., introduced a resolution during a meeting Thursday recognizing the Tigers for a claim to the national title. The measure was passed with no objections; resolutions don't have the force of law and by the chamber's definition reflect the Senate's "sentiments," according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Still, it adds another odd wrinkle to college football history for a sport decided by polls and rankings decades ago before the arrival of the Bowl Championship Series or today's College Football Playoff. Missouri hadn't previously claimed the 1960 team as a national champion.
In an email to The Associated Press on Friday, Missouri team spokesman Dave Matter said the school is "aware" of the resolution but offered no additional comment.
Missouri went 10-1 on the field after beating Navy and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Bellino in the Orange Bowl. The lone loss had come to "Border War" rival Kansas in a game to decide the then-Big Eight Conference title, though the league ordered the Jayhawks to forfeit for using an ineligible player because of recruiting violations.
In a past interview with the The Post-Dispatch, author Brendon Steenbergen -- who wrote a book detailing that season -- said: "I've been beating the drum to try to get the university to recognize it because I think they have as much a right as anyone in the country to be national champions in 1960."
Minnesota was crowed champion by the AP and United Press International polls, though that took place before the Gophers lost to Washington in the Rose Bowl. The Football Writers Association of America voted Mississippi its post-bowl champion.
The Helms Athletic Foundation, created in 1936 to promote amateur athletics until dissolving in 1983, recognized Washington as its champion. Meanwhile, the Litkenhous Rating system chose Iowa with its mathematical formula utilizing scoring margins and opponent strength, according to The Athletic.
A's, GM Forst 'agreed to part ways'
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- David Forst won't return as general manager of the Athletics, with the team announcing Friday that the two sides have "mutually agreed to part ways."
Assistant general manager Dan Feinstein will work as interim GM for the remainder of the season as the team begins searching for a permanent replacement.
"David has been an integral part of the A's and our success for nearly three decades," team owner and managing partner John Fisher said in a statement. "His leadership, dedication, and commitment to this team have helped shape our baseball operations department and position us for the future. We are grateful for everything David has done for our organization."
Forst received a new contract last September for this season, coming as the club continued a transition in California's capital region while waiting for a planned relocation to Las Vegas in 2028. The move comes with the Athletics sitting near the bottom of the AL West at 45-70.
Forst had been GM since 2015 and with the organization since 2000.
"It was truly an honor to spend the last 27 years with the A's, especially the last 11 as the GM," Forst said in a statement. "This organization is full of incredibly talented, devoted, and good people, and I am lucky to have worked alongside them for so long."
