Scrappers bounce back to defeat Crosscutters

NILES — A mere 13 hours after the Mahoning Valley Scrappers were shut out by Williamsport on Tuesday, the two teams returned to 7 17 Credit Union Field for a Wednesday morning game.

In game two of a three-game series, the Scrappers’ bats responded to the early morning wake-up call, resulting in an 8-4 Scrappers home victory over the Crosscutters.

“After a game like (Tuesday), it’s always nice to have a bounce-back,” Scrappers second baseman Jarren Purify said. “I think our whole team was anxious to get back at it.”

Purify led the charge with three of the Scrappers’ 11 hits, including a home run, a double and four RBIs.

Nick Williams, James Whitman and Ryan Nelson each contributed with a pair of hits and an RBI.

The Scrappers as a team swiped five bases.

The Scrappers scored the game’s first run in the second inning. Jack Cannon reached on a two-out single. Cannon then advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third, which allowed Williams the opportunity to collect an RBI with an infield single.

The Scrappers put together a string of two-out hits in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-0. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning, Williams and Whitman reached on back-to-back singles. Nelson doubled, knocking in Williams. A wild pitch scored Whitman. Then Purify belted a two-run home run, a 420-foot shot over the centerfield wall.

“We had a runner on third and I was just looking to put the ball in play and score another run,” Purify said. “Fortunately for me I got it up in the air and the ball just carried.

“Overall we all played better as a team today. We were more aggressive than we were (Tuesday). It felt like we let too many heaters get by us in that first game and it put us in early two-strike counts. Today we just wanted to come out here and swing the bat a little more aggressively, make hard contact and put the ball in play.”

Scrappers starter David Lally (University of Michigan) worked four scoreless innings. In two starts, Lally has allowed just one run on five hits while recording 10 strikeouts.

“When your starter is dealing like that, you want to put up some runs for him, you want to give him some support,” Purify said.

The Crosscutters responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, courtesy of an Addison Smith two-RBI triple. However, the Scrappers answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Whitman plated Williams with a single. Purify then picked up his third and fourth RBIs of the game with a two-out double.

Purify (Clemson University) says that he believes he and his teammates are “doing a good job” of settling into life in the MLB Draft League.

“This is what pro ball is like, the travel, the playing every day and spending whole days at the ballpark,” Purify said. “This is what we love to do, this is what we want our futures to be.

“I feel like this league does a great job of getting us ready for that next level. The league is very well-run, very organized and our manager and coaches are doing a fantastic job of guiding us. There’s a lot of experience and knowledge in that clubhouse. It’s up to us to take advantage of it.”

The Scrappers and Crosscutters will conclude their three-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Starting at $3.23/week.
