Boardman sweeps boys, girls team titles at Mahoning County track and field championships

The Boardman boys and girls track team swept the 111th Mahoning County High School Track and Field Championships on Tuesday.

The Spartan boys amassed 98.5 points, and the girls posted 123.5.

The boys’ runner-up was Austintown Fitch (80), while Canfield (65) took third, Ursuline (49.5) was fourth and Lowellville (40) rounded out the top five. On the girls’ side, Fitch (71.5) was second, West Branch (52) was third, Chaney (40) finished fourth and Canfield (33) came in fifth.

For the Boardman boys, the 4×800 relay team combined to run 8:23.09 to win the event. And Adam Nigro ran a 1:59.83 to take the 800-meter run, finishing 0.13 seconds ahead of Canfield’s Alex Taranto.

Boardman’s team of Haley Bero, Mia Duble, Moriah Doyle and Jordyn Lacivita won the girls 4×800 with a 10:16.26.

In the sprints, Gigi Angiuli clocked a 15.52 to win the 100 hurdles.

As for the girls’ distance events, Boardman’s Olivia Brady and Bero were the top-two runners in the 1600, as Brady won with a 5:25.01 and Bero was right behind with a 5:31.85. Brady also won the 800 by posting a 2:26.98.

For the Spartan girls in the field events, Liliana Ison threw 38-06.00 to win the shot put.

BOYS

Ursuline’s Tyler Starghill (14.73) and Xavier Starghill (14.88) both broke the meet record in the 110 hurdles, with Tyler Starghill winning the race. Xavier Starghill also got a win after taking the 300 hurdles with a 39.84.

Fellow Fighting Irish athlete Connor Crilley threw 158-06 to win the discus.

Lowellville standout Drew Modelski set a meet record at 49.81 in the 400, and he was timed at 10.86 as the winner of the 100.

Fitch’s Jackson Potkonicky won the pole vault with a 9-00.00.

West Branch sophomore Jax Rockwell and Campbell sophomore Carl Sargianopoulos both leaped 6-00.00 in the high jump, but Rockwell won it on attempts.

Canfield’s 4×200 relay team combined for a 1:31.02 as the winner, beating Fitch by just over a second in the second heat. The Cardinals earned another win when Taranto ran 4:27.11 in the 1600.

East’s Bray’Den Barnett took the long jump with a 20-07.25.

GIRLS

Chaney’s 4×200 relay team set the meet record with a 1:46.73. The Cowboys got another relay win in the 4×100 with a 52.03.

Fitch seniors Mallory Whorten and Samantha Davis both put up 7-06.00 to take the top spots in the pole vault. Whorten was the winner by reaching the mark on her first attempt. The Falcons also had the first two finishers in the long jump, with DeAira Smith (15-05.25) winning and Kayla Clinkscale (15-03.25) was the runner-up.

Paola Andino picked up a win for Lowellville by running 12.66 in the 100. She also won the 400 with a 1:02.19.

West Branch earned the top two spots in the high jump, with Tallie Muniz winning with 4-10.00 and Kendelle Hoopes taking second with 4-08.00.

Western Reserve’s Addison Becka ran 46.74 to take the top spot in the 300 hurdles.
