Mahoning Valley to send 20 to state wrestling tournament
Twenty local wrestlers secured spots at next weekend’s OHSAA state tournament with top-four finishes at their respective district events.
South Range senior Tyson Seesholtz, who finished second at state a year ago, and returning state placer Reghan Koch of Austintown Fitch both earned district titles over the weekend. Seesholtz did so in Independence in the 165-pound weight class, while Koch pinned each of her four opponents en route to the 170-pound championship in Mentor.
Nearly 120 area athletes competed across six district tournaments this past weekend, with each needing to place in the top four of their weight class to earn a place in the state tournament. In addition to Seesholtz and Koch, the Valley wrestlers to do so were Salem’s Paige Menough, Poland’s Ella Thomas, Hubbard’s Markel Hackwelder, West Branch’s Beau Nezbeth and Grace Bates, Canfield’s Gabe Miller, Pymatuning Valley’s Bennett Claypoole, Brookfield’s Isabella Williams, Springfield’s Abigale Miller, Howland’s Owen Dreher, South Range’s Ralph Stellato and Eddie Stachowicz, Jackson-Milton’s Cole Cappelli and Fitch’s Chayce Kemble, Noah Bolen, Stephen Pontius, Yelieishka Perez-Navedo and Mya Quarles.
In the event a top-four district finisher cannot compete next weekend, the wrestler who finished in fifth place from their district can replace them. The state alternates from the area include Howland’s Brayden Cortese and Aidan O’Donnell, Canfield’s Jose Estremera and Tristan Miller, West Branch’s Gavin Hang and Abigail Janosik, Pymatuning Valley’s Caleb Marrison, Garfield’s Landon Andel, South Range’s Michael Uplinger, Hubbard’s Adora Hale and Fitch’s Evan Protopapa, Madison Galchick and Mary Averell.
The state tournament is set to begin Friday and continue through Sunday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
