Local swimmers compete at state meet

The state swim meet was held at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton this past week, with the finals taking place Friday and Saturday.

The Springfield girls were the top finishers from the area, tying for ninth with 85 points in Division II. Canfield was 38th with 10, Howland tied for 49th with six and Poland was 53rd with four.

For the boys, Salem came in 40th with 12 points to lead the area schools, and Poland tied for 48th with six as Ursuline came in 50th with five

In Division I, Boardman’s girls finished tied for 31st with 17 points.

DIVISION II GIRLS

Springfield’s Paige McCombs claimed fourth after swimming 1:53.39 in the girls 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle with a 52.13. Fellow Tiger Tres Hively was seventh in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke by finishing with times of 5:13.28 and 58.45, respectively.

The Springfield girls took eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:51.05) as Tres Hively, McCombs, Kallie Pellice and Blythe Hively competed. The four also combined for a 3:44.85, which was good enough for 12th, in the 400 freestyle relay.

Howland’s Jules Dewberry came in 11th with a 1:06.79 in the girls 100 breaststroke.

The Canfield girls were 13th in the 200 medley relay after clocking a 1:52.16 with Gianna Gamberale, Lyla Gray, Matea Ronyak and Josie Portain in the pool. Lyla Gray also was 15th in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:08.44.

DIVISION II BOYS

Salem’s Ryan Folger finished seventh in the boys 100 butterfly with a time of 50.52.

Ursuline’s Michael Lattanzio had a 47.97 to finish 12th in the boys 100 freestyle.

Poland’s boys 200 freestyle relay team of Jake O’Bruba, Alex Khoury, Aaron Vandervort and Sean Zura took 14th with a 1:30.29.

Howland had a representative in the boys para events, as Kellan Shipman came in third with a 37.52 and a 1:52.82 in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, respectively.

DIVISION I GIRLS

Alex Taylor came in seventh for the Spartans in the 100 backstroke by recording a 56.69.

Boardman’s 400 freestyle relay team of Ella Miller, Rachel DunLany, Aly Murray and Taylor joined to swim 3:38.81 to earn 14th.
