YSU women stay hot, beat Purdue Fort Wayne

Sophia Gregory’s historic performance helped the Youngstown State women’s basketball team pull out a 76-71 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday.

The Penguins’ fourth straight win improved their record to 21-8 overall and 14-5 in conference play, while clinching the No. 2 seed for the Horizon League tournament.

Gregory was nearly unstoppable, finishing with career highs of 37 points and 19 rebounds while going 16-for-19 from the field.

According to HerHoopStats.com, no other player in the country this season has had at least 37 points and 19 rebounds in the same game. She added three assists, three steals and two blocks to her legendary stat line.

She had the highest point total by a Penguin since Heidi Schlegel scored 38 points at Valparaiso 11 years ago to the date, and her 16 field goals tied Schlegel for the most by a YSU player since 1988. Her 19 rebounds were the most since Lilly Ritz grabbed 21 on March 2, 2023.

Gregory scored 13 points in the second quarter to help Youngstown State take a 41-36 lead at halftime, and scored 14 points in the final 5:28 to help the Penguins hold off the Mastodons.
