STRUTHERS — Ireland’s Josh Tumama, Sr. scored a split decision over Keith Burnside of Burnside Athletic Club in the 147-pound main event of Saturday’s international ‘Fight Night’ at the Struthers Field House.
The 13-bout, all-amateur international card, presented by Paolone-n-Burnside Boxing, also featured Henry Murray of the UK, who earned a unanimous decision over Levi Williams of Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing in the 175 pound co-main.
The event highlighted 10 international fighters against an all-American line-up.
Burnside, who fell to 13-3 with the loss, felt like he could have performed better in the ring with so much at stake.
“I had a rough training camp coming in,” he said after the fight. “You win some, you lose some, and while I am disappointed in the outcome, I’m still learning the process. I felt like my endurance cost me, and next time, the plan is to throw more combinations because that’s what was working for me tonight.”
Williams (3-5) had no argument with the final outcome of his fight with Murray.
“Henry was a tough opponent and in the end, I felt like he was the better conditioned fighter,” Williams said. “You take the W’s with the L’s, it’s all a part of the game. One thing that I will do next time out, I will throw more jabs, even when I am tired.”
Burnside A.C.’s Austin Gibson was one of two local winners, joining Carly Calderone of former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik’s Gym.
Gibson (11-7) scored a split decision over the UK’s Luke Neale in a 142 pound pairing, surviving a standing eight-count in the third round and bloody nose moments later that made him even more determined to finish his comeback.
“I knew that (Luke) would be fast, hit hard and he came out ready.” Gibson said. “My gameplan was to apply pressure, and while he got me in the first round, I felt like the second round was a toss-up. He drew blood in the third round, got me early and after I was cleared, I just told the Lord to help get me through the remainder of the round so I have a chance.
“I was able to finish strong and appreciated the final decision. I’m now going to talk to my family and God and perhaps turn pro. I just turned 27 years-old so it is now or never for me.”
Calderone, a 2023 graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in international business, stopped Olivia White of Columbus in a 133-pound scrap, the only female match-up on the card.
“Kelly (Pavlik) kept telling me to keep my hands up and punch straight down the middle,” Calderone said. “(White) was in excellent shape and brought a lot of energy, which is why I kept listening for his (Pavlik’s) voice throughout the fight.”
The other two winners on the card included Xavier Campbell (23-9) of Erie, Pennsylvania, who earned a unanimous decision over Ireland’s Mason Byrne at 120 pounds and Philadelphia’s Josiah Brown, who was a winner by split decision over Charles Murray – Henry’s twin brother – at 168 pounds.
Angel Pizarro (2-0) of Lorain kicked off the card with his second victory when the referee stopped his 138-pound pairing with local Armani Richardson (0-1) just 43 seconds into the second round, while Husain Akinyele (9-3) of Columbus was a winner over Drew Mercer (8-10) of Alliance in a 165-pound clash.
The international portion of the card began with Luke Powell winning by second-round abandonment over Madox Smith (2-6) of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, in a 140-pound match, followed by Joen Daniel, also of the UK, who recorded a split-decision victory over Damon Darling (7-3) of Cleveland at 125 pounds.
Other international winners included Alfie Barrett (UK), who posted a unanimous decision over Aiden Bollinger (3-13) of Ellwood City Police Boxing Club at 153 pounds; Tayte Daniel of the UK, a split decision winner over Jayden Thompson (0-3) of Cleveland in a 125-pound pairing; and Ireland’s James O’Neil (6-3), who was a unanimous decision victor over Mason Johnston, also of Ellwood City Police B.C., in a 132-pound match.
