BOYS BASKETBALL
Howland 59, Poland 54 — Luca Naples led Howland (13-9) with 16 points. Ta-Shawn Fambro added 13 for the Tigers and Steven Bubon was also in double figures with 11 points. Poland’s (16-6) Carmine Tukalo was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points. Nick Nittoli chipped in with 13 points for the Bulldogs.
West Branch 43, South Range 39 — Jeremiah Thomas was one of three West branch scorers in double figures, leading the way with 13 points. Grady Hirst added 12 points and Gavin Gregory had 10 for the Warriors, who trailed 34-31 entering the fourth quarter, but Jeremiah Thomas took over, scoring six in the closing period. Gregory and Hirst were also strong on the glass pulling in seven and six rebounds respectively. Nick Toy led all scorers with 23 points for South Range. Tommy Titus added 13 for the Raiders.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Warren JFK 64, Windham 11 — JFK held Windham to nine first half points and just two points in the second half. The Eagles were led in scoring by Gianna Pompelia with 22 points. Also in double figures for the Eagles was Didi Ryan (13 points) and Annie Phillips (11). Brielle Jones scored six to lead Windham.
Girard 66, Champion 29 — Caylee Wilkes led all scorers with 23 points to lead Girard. Ally Gassman added 13 for the Indians and Janaya Riley scored 12. For Champion, Julia Boggs led the way with 11 points.
Lake 55, Howland 43 — Hayden Croyle led Lake with 21 points. Kaitlyn Josef added 13 for the Blue Streaks. Howland was led by Maya Kubancsek, who was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points. Talia Rishel was also in double figures with 12 points.
Open Door Christian 57, Lisbon 39 — Briella Bendik poured in a game-high 40 points for Open Door (10-11). Bendik hit four 3-pointers and made 12 of 16 free throws. Jayden Smyth led the way for Lisbon (13-10) with 16 points. Lylah Brown was also in double figures with 12 points.
LaBrae 57, Cardinal Mooney 17 — Angel Scruggs and Makayla Scruggs combined for 25 points to lead LaBrae over Mooney. Angel led the Vikings with 15 points. Amiyah McCants scored eight to lead Mooney.
Poland 59, Massillon Tuslaw 37 — Briella Rowe led a balanced Poland (16-7) offense with 15 points. Brooklyn Kosco (12 points) and Leanna Boccierri (10) were also in double figures for the Bulldogs. Kailey Valentine led Tuslaw with 15 points. Poland will now meet Berkshire in a district semi-final matchup on Tuesday.
SWIMMING
Division I District Championships
at Cleveland State
Swimmers from both the Boardman boys and girls swim teams competed at the district championships, with multiple swimmers qualifying for the State Championships. On the boys side, the Spartans finished second as a team. Individually, Zach Mihok is headed to state in the boys 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Mihok finished second in both events.The boys 200 freestyle relay team (Zachary Mihok, Lee Arent, Dominic White, Jack Benson) and 400 freestyle relay team (Jack Benson, Samuel DiStefano, Dominic White, Zachary Mihok) placed first and will advance to the state championships. On the girls side, Boardman placed sixth as a team. Individually, Alex Taylor placed first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 100 freestyle, advancing to state in both events. Rachel DunLany placed third and will compete at state in the 200 freestyle. Also qualifying for state were both the 200 freestyle relay team (Alex Taylor, Rachel DunLany, Julia Pickens, Ella Miller) and the 400 freestyle relay team (Ella Miller, Rachel DunLany, Aly Murray, Alex Taylor) with third place finishes.
