Champion qualifies for boys Division II state tournament
On Friday, the Champion boys bowling team punched its ticket to the state tournament.
The Golden Flashes took third at their Division II district tournament at Rebman Lanes with a team total of 4,101. Coventry won the district with a 4,212, Fairport Harding was the runner-up at 4,136 and Lake Catholic took the final team qualifying spot by finishing fourth with a 4.093.
Champion had three place in the top 25. Mario Humenik took ninth after scoring a 641, junior Kyle Kolat was 15th with 611 and senior Derrick Campbell tied Keystone’s Andrew Hetsler for 25th with a 590. Junior James Swiger ended in a tie for 30th after bowling 570, and sophomore Gavin Torok claimed 100th with a 214.
Chalker sophomore T.J. Williams was the lone local to claim an individual qualifier. He came in fifth overall with a 657. Coventry’s Wade Allen was the top individual with a 738.
OTHER LOCALS
Crestview, Springfield, LaBrae, Lakeview, Lowellville and Ursuline also competed at Rebman.
The Rebels finished 11th (3,735), with senior Brody Brubaker getting in 15th-place finish as Crestview’s top bowler with a 601.
Springfield came in 12th (3,714), and the Tigers’ top finisher was junior Rylan Slusser with a 597, who landed just outside the top 20 at 22nd.
LaBrae landed in 13th (3,706) after sophomore Nathan Morris led the way with 564 and a 34th-place finish.
The Bulldogs ended the day in 15th (3,351). Junior Brayden Shanower was the top Bulldog with 548, which was good enough for 39th.
Lowellville tallied a 16th-place finish (3,240), and junior Cooper Jones bowled a 517 for 58th to lead the team.
The Fighting Irish were the final local team, taking 17th (2,926). Michael Shaughnessy claimed 75th with a 493 as Ursuline’s top representative.
Individually, Warren JFK junior Andrew Totten took 16th after registering a 607, Hubbard sophomore Max Mansour got 30th with a 570, Struthers’ Owen Eisenbraun concluded his senior season with a 74th-place finish and a 494 and Lordstown junior Chase Zelznick came in 87th with a 432.
