HANOVERTON — The Campbell girls basketball team gave United everything it could handle on Thursday night at United High School.
However, the more experienced and 17th-seeded Eagles used a fourth-quarter run to beat the
28th-seeded Red Devils 50-33 in a Division VI, Northeast 4 sectional final.
Despite it being a loss, Thursday’s game was a step forward for the Red Devils. They opted out of the tournament last season, so Campbell’s young roster played in a playoff game for the first time in two years.
“I was really impressed with our performance tonight,” Campbell head coach Ashlyn Cleevely said. “No one counted us in this game, but we competed for three-and-a-half quarters. We gave them a run for their money tonight. We were battling on both ends of the court, we were rebounding, we beat their press a couple times – we didn’t let that speed us up.”
Both teams battled foul trouble in the first quarter. Neither offense really got into a rhythm, but United had a size advantage, so it capitalized on the offensive boards and steals.
However, a three by Campbell’s Nani Rodriguez cut the United lead to 11-7 with a minute to play in the first.
The Red Devils (6-16) got another 3-pointer from Amira Kamal to make it an 11-10 game, and a layup from Rodriguez gave the Devils a one-point lead a couple of minutes into the second.
Back-to-back 3-pointers capped an 11-0 Campbell run, but the Eagles (14-8) fought back and cut the lead to 20-18 just before halftime.
United’s Ines Vilela Rego tied the game at 26 with just under three and a half minutes to play in the third after she split a pair of free throws. Then the Eagles’ press defense started to take its toll on the Red Devils. Bad passes and pressure led to turnovers and extra possessions for United.
Reagan Good scored on a put-back to give the Eagles a 30-29 lead with 1:40 left in the quarter.
The Eagles outscored Campbell 10-2 over a three-minute stretch between the third and fourth quarters to take and extend their lead to 42-33.
Campbell began to press with 4:34 to play. But the Red Devils couldn’t convert on the offensive end, and the Eagles outscored the underdogs 18-2 in the fourth quarter.
“They hit their momentum, and we lost ours,” Cleevely said. “It was a switch, it was all that switch was. They made two or three baskets in a row. We needed to fight back mentally and not let that moment get too big for us, but that’s just being young. That’s getting more game reps, that’s being more experienced. That will be better next year.”
Yaleiska Diaz led Campbell with 11 points, Rodriguez finished with eight and Le’Asia Miller had five.
The Red Devils couldn’t stop the combination of Maelee Smith and Good. The two combined for 16 of the Eagles’ 18 points in the fourth. Smith finished with a game-high 23 points, and Good had 13.
This season was a positive for the Red Devils, who were coming off a 2-20 campaign in 2024-25. They were 4-6 to start the year, but the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier was strong this season, and they dropped seven straight games in January.
Cleevely said the goal for next year is to continue to make progress and “keep the belief” as the program looks to continue its rebuild.
Campbell will bring back most of its roster next season. The Devils only had two seniors, Miller and Kamal, but both played roles on the team this season.
“Those two seniors brought leadership and energy. They always worked hard in practice, always did what they were told,” Cleevely said. “They set the example in practice and in the games, for sure. They will be missed.”
