WINDHAM — Coming into Tuesday’s contest against Windham on a two-game skid, Mineral Ridge coach Marcus Higgs wanted to reset.
After a bit of a slow first half, the Rams used a big third quarter to help propel themselves to a 52-41 victory over the Bombers.
“I thought we started the first quarter well, and then into that first quarter, we got out of character,” Higgs said. “We took a lot of rough shots, losing our guys defensively at times, just weren’t being us. Our third quarters have been the best all year, but after halftime, a couple of adjustments here and there, and talking to these guys, I thought we had a hell of a third quarter where we took a 24-point lead.”
Chase Moore led the way for the Rams with a 22-point outing. Moore scored all but six of his points in the middle two frames.
Seven players registered points for Mineral Ridge on Tuesday, which was another of Higgs’ goals. The Rams have relied heavily on their starting five all season and wanted to get their depth players some quality minutes.
“Tonight the goal was to get my starters rolling and then see if I can find help for them,” Higgs said. “It’s tournament time. I’ve been telling my guys that I can’t continue to play five guys no matter who we’re playing. Tonight, I played about 10 guys. I wanted to see who could give us something. I can’t continue to play five guys when tournament time hits.”
Dejuan Ramsey led Windham (2-18) with 11 points.
Bombers coach Cody Apthorpe could not be reached following the game for comment.
Windham has two games left on the schedule, playing host to Garfield and ending the season on the road against Badger.
Mineral Ridge closes the season out with Western Reserve and Newton Falls.
With two tough teams left and then the tournament following close behind, the Rams (14-6) want to see some added consistency coming down the stretch.
“We didn’t have too much consistency tonight. The biggest thing I need to see is consistency and to be able to finish,” Higgs said. “I’ve got guys that can score, but can we do it consistently? There’s too many times where we have too many breakdowns, where we have too many empty possessions. If we can fix that and have some other guys off the bench step up, I think we could be a dangerous team.”
