YSU men fall to Wright State, 93-83
The Youngstown State men’s basketball team’s losing streak in Horizon League play extended to six games on Thursday.
Despite leading by one at halftime, the Penguins struggled to stop the Raiders, falling on the road 93-83 at the Nutter Center in Dayton.
YSU trailed the majority of the first half but managed to take a slight 43-42 lead at halftime thanks to a 3-pointer from Bryson Dawkins. He was a perfect 6-for-6 at one point, and scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the first half.
Wright State outscored the Penguins 51-40 in the second half. YSU had the deficit down to two midway through the period, but the Raiders went on a run to push the lead to double figures and the Penguins were unable to dig themselves out of the hole.
Defense continues to be an issue for YSU, as it had issues getting stops against the Raiders. Wright State shot 53.3% overall and 55.6% from beyond the arc.
Five players scored in double figures for the Penguins, which shot 46.8% overall, while knocking down 14 3-pointers. In addition to Dawkins, Vlad Salaridze had a season-high 17 points, while Jason Nelson, Jaiden Haynes and Imanuel Zorgvol each had 11 points.
YSU’s leading scorer Cris Carroll battled foul trouble all night and only finished with two points.
TJ Burch led the Raiders with 24 points, while Kellen Pickett added 18.
The Penguins continue their road swing on Saturday with a trip to the Wolstein Center to face Cleveland State at 2 p.m.
