YSU’s Abbie Householder named Horizon Scholar-Athlete of the Season

Youngstown State senior volleyball player Abbie Householder earned another award on Thursday.

The Canfield graduate was named the Horizon League’s Female Fall Scholar-Athlete of the Season after a stellar 2025 campaign.

Householder became the second Penguin in YSU history to be named a Scholar-Athlete of the Season by the Horizon League. Former cross country and track runner Morgan Cole earned the same honors in Fall 2022 and Winter 2023.

The vote was conducted by the conference’s faculty athletics representatives, and to be eligible, a student-athlete must be a member of that sport’s all-academic team.

Thursday marked three straight days of awards for Householder.

On Tuesday, she was announced as an Academic All-District selection and a finalist for Academic All-America by College Sports Communicators. And on Wednesday, she became the second YSU volleyball player to receive All-American Honorable Mention by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Earlier in the offseason, she was named the Horizon League Volleyball Player of the Year and the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, she was named to the league’s All-Academic Team for the season consecutive season, and she was an Academic All-District selection for the third straight year.

Householder led the Horizon League with 562.5 points and 502 kills this fall – her kills and points rank third in school history for a single season. She also was seventh in the league in aces (35) and eighth in hitting percentage (.276).

She finished her career as YSU’s all-time leader in kills (1,427) and attempts (4,241). She ranks third in Penguin history in digs, fourth in points and sixth in aces.

Starting at $3.23/week.
